Well it's new to me ;)

Just taken delivery of a Pioneer PD-S505 which uses the Stable Platter mechanism. I've always wanted to try a Stable Platter machine

I'm going to use it purely as a transport into the Audio Note Dac

Trying it out in a little while..:D

Back in the 80s I purchased an Audio Technica CD Stabilizer disc. Basically a CD Shaped piece of black aluminium.

From that point I got into the habit of putting it on top of every CD I inserted. I was convinced with my Mission PCM7000 and Marantz CD63 Ki Signature it made a difference.

Was hard to break the habit once I got a Pioneer stable platter - but obviously no sound emitted every time I made the mistake. :doh:

Luckily after some drunken CD session I accidentally put the CD stabilizer in a CD case I put away.

Eventually found the damn thing about a decade later (was in a seldom listened to CD Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music). I have now tucked it away in cupboard so I no longer feel the urge to put it on top of CDs in my Stable Platter. :lol:

Well Geoff it seems to be working just fine, I've tried a few cd's through it including some cdr's and it seems to be reading everything fine... I know it's always risky buying used cd players but this one seems perfect at the moment...

What does it sound like I hear you ask? well it's a little bit to early to give any impressions at the moment but at least it's working as it should... relief..;)

Thanks Josie it is sounding fine at the moment. Whether it is better than the DV-717 I've been using only time will tell but I'm happy at the moment..:D

I had one, decent transport but much better with a Tent clock and even better when clock linked to the dac. I suggest you give Colin at Chevron Audio a ring to see if clock linking is possible with your dac, if it is be prepared to be blown away.;)

Thanks Andrew I might consider doing that once I've got used to the current sound of the player as a transport...;)

The new cd is performing perfectly and it doesn't seem to bother what I throw at it, whether it's cdr's or not....

I like what I hear so far... ;)

Had a couple of those. Pretty decent machines but prefer my 717. Stables are a touch too analytical for my current preferences. Could easily live with one though and no doubt will again lol

I like it Grant.... and I certainly don't find it too analytical at all...however I cannot yet decide if it is better or worse, or just different, than my 717...

I do like the nice sturdy draw on it though.... I will keep you all posted to my findings in the near future... :)

Yes PD-S703 Stable Platter as a backup to my Squeezebox Touch and Pi Wolfson.

Just tonight I played a rip of a recent purchase of an Art of Noise CD that was bronzing (1987 In No Sense ? , Nonsense !).

Could tell from the Rip that all was not right - played the CD on the Pioneer was better but still not right (so I have ordered another CD - if the Pioneer cannot play it then this CD is seriously F***ked).

I don't know the pecking order of the Pioneers but the same seller is also selling S601, S702, S503 and S801 at starts of £10 or £9.50.

Why is the S505 at £26.50 start?

I am still trying to get a handle on the sound of the new cd player, used as a transport only ...

I like it but thought I'd swap some cables about and that's only confused me more... the swap of cables has changed the sound somewhat which it didn't when I did that on the 717....

Very strange.... ;)

It's the end number that is more valuable, so an "05" tends to be better, a PD-S703 is not as good as a PD-S505. The "05" players also have dedicated SPDIF out boards.

On an aside I have a very tidy PD-S505 that I don't use anymore if anyone is interested?

I have swapped back to the 717..... oh it is so difficult to decide but my first thoughts are that the 717 sounds a bit better.... I guess it just goes to show how good these old Pioneer DVD players are as a transport..

Further listening will tell and I will report back soon...;)

Bit of an update...

Unfortunately the new cd player has a fault... it took a few cd's through it until I noticed it but it is intermittently distorting the sound which kind of sounds like crackles through the speakers...

I have swapped back to the 717 just to be sure and it is definitely the new (to me) player creating the problem, which is a great shame :(

I have already contacted the eBayer seller and to be honest he has been fantastic, just had to open a 'Return' process through eBay and the seller has already paid for a return label through Royal Mail so that I just have to affix the label to the box and return it at no cost to me

I have never had to return an item purchased through eBay, which might just be lucky I guess, however the seller has been very good indeed

It is such a shame as I love the stable platter system on this cd player

A nasty distortion of the sound Grant....

Initially it sounded like crackles through the speakers as if the mains lead was not connected properly .... actually the mains lead on the 505 is captive. However I wiggled the cable around where it enters into the player but could not reproduce the problem.. I then wiggled all the other connectors and could not reproduce the problem so I know it's not a cable problem

It just produces distortion after about 5-10 minutes into any cd I play.. initially it sounded like crackles but I now think it is distortion and I don't want to commit my system, and especially my precious speakers, to this distortion as I am sure it will be doing it no good...

Update...

The seller refunded the price of the cd and the postage, which was superb of him. He is now selling the same cd player as 'faulty' so at least he was able to hear the problem as well

The seller was fantastic about the return of the item and I still gave him positive feedback because of that

I am now back to my 717 for the time being...
