The size are pretty big. I'd love one but they are simply too big especiallly with the meter bridge.

The APR's are truly fantastic machines with a sound quality to rival some of the finest analogue tape recorders.

The Otari MTR's are also staggeringly good - exceptionally well built with extremely high reliability. Line up on them is a dream thanks to all of the adjustments being out on the front panel on potentiometers.

When properly set up they sound excellent.

As has already been said I think it is the size that puts people off although their actual footprint is quite small and being standalone they are operationally extremely efficient (as many console machines are).

Also particularly the Sony is quite daunting operationally in terms of setup if one is not used to standard line up of analogue machines. Once you are familiar with the procedures though they are a pure dream to set up.

Those Otari MTR10 are a fantastic machine, I was watching that myself and notice that it is advertised again so didnt sell as cheap as I thought

I was also watching this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Otari-MTR-10-Half-Track-1-4-Reel-To-Reel-Tape-Recorder-Mastering-Machine/131566151868?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D29974%26meid%3D584a85efb8714f22ab6d5eba6f71 215a%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D2719 33663435

Which is still cheap for a proffessional machine, I just cant think of another line I can give the wife that will justtify yet another R2R player :(

And how much would 10.5" diameter spools of blank tape cost you?

4 x 1/4" tape + £5.99.

What you do is buy some 2" gaffer and lay down 4 reels of 1/4" side by side on it. :)

Personally I think that expectation of high price is completely skewed by the ethusuiasm for particularly enthused about brands and specific machines like Studer A807, A820s etc.

Then it is expected that other machines of the same quality should then automatically priced high.. and so dealers/collectors price theirs high with buy it nows which rarely sell. Seeing these unsold items being advertised then primes people's minds to thinking they SHOULD cost this much simply through exposure.

It's would be a bit like people trying to sell better small monitors than the LS3/5a at LS3/5a prices simply because they are better... but without realising it's a specific LS3/5a fettish/enthusiasm going on.

At auction, a lot of these very nice machines only achieve much lower prices than the buy-it-nows asked. Different of course if you're paying for a machine which is fully serviced and guaranteed - that's worth a fair bit in itself.

Now there is a reserve - perhaps the seller didn't like the price after spotting the one with a buy-it-now. I expect it to be endlessly listed, never meeting reserve until the seller gets fed up..

A low hours Sony one I saw sell with only one bid at £500 a fair while ago - would seem a more realistic price.
