Hello enthusiasts. I've loved music all my life but I'm ashamed to admit I was happy with just a record player till I heard my friends Hi_fi and I knew I'd have to get one. So I recently bought three shiny new toys and got a nice man from the shop to set it up for me. It's a Project Essential 2, the white one, a silver Rotel RA10 and white Kef speakers, the Q100s. Isn't Hi-fi dear? Well I love it but I've found it most of my records are crackly and in bad condition, so more expesne ahead I guess. Think I'm gonna need some advice.................?

Welcome Clare. you sound like an rcm of sorts is required to clean those records up. alas they are expensive and if you dont have a huge collection of vinyl then probably not cost effective.
...any ways there are plenty threads re record cleaning, and you could also open one of your own in analogue if you fancy it

enjoy the forum

Thanks. I think my records are damaged by my previous needle. I'm trying to get my father to let me have some of his, only trouble's that they aren't really my tastes.

Welcome Claire, get stuck in and enjoy the Site.

Hifi CAN be expensive, but part of the appeal of AOS is that its all about getting great sound for as little money as possible, and loads of folks here have built up inexpensive but great sounding systems.
You dont need to spend a fortune to get great sound and your system looks very good.

For myself when I first joined I got great advice on making the most of what I had, which improved the sound a lot!
Its all about the music, the hifi just gets you there. :)

You can pick up vinyl quite cheap online, depending on what your after, from places like Discogs...a 2nd hand music website.

Be careful though, I've just got back into vinyl recently and it seems to have hoovered up my wallet...:D

Hi Claire (my sister is called Claire :)), it is possible that your records are permanently damaged but it isn't necessarily the case. I would buy a new record that you do like - Amazon sell thousands these days, just type vinyl in their search after the record you want.

As for your old records, well they can be cleaned. Hopefully an AoS member who lives near to you will have a cleaning machine and can do a couple for you so you can see (hear) the difference.

Welcome to AoS Clare.

Curious forum name you have: "leg7". Care to explain?

Sadly it seems that you might have damaged some of your records, but some may be recoverable by giving them a good clean.

Enjoy the Forum

Regards
Barry

Gazjam, so I went and had a look. Sellers with 38 negative feedbacks!!!
I won't be sending any of them my money any time soon. What's the point of having feedback if you can get 38negs and still not be sacked.
Oh and have you seen how they grade records?
By looking at them!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heyup Barry, why are you called Barry, was it your mom or your pa who called it you and why? :carrot:
The record have gone in the trash, I played them on a Fidelity record player with a saphire needle tracking at 6 grams. They were totally koofed.

True. Ive not had all that many good buys at boot sales vinyl wise. Too many have been badly played to death ( in my neck of woods ).Al lives in a more effluent area, so its quite possible tat he gets better quality stuff.

I agree with a lot of the comments already made on here in reply to your thread; boot sales can yield good results !!!! An inherent problem with vinyl that you are never ever gonna get away from is the odd nick and crackle caused by marks, static, dust and what-have-you. Its just the nature of the beast !!!! I like vinyl but, I also don't like vinyl for those aforementioned reasons. I love the artwork, I love the full sound spectrum of the recording being there on that black plastic, I also think that some things sound better on vinyl than CD (ignoring the nicks/marks) but you gotta be realistic - CD is best (IMHO) and I know some purists will disagree.

Vinyl is now back in vogue so, as you are already probably aware, you are now seeing the prices all being hiked up and all the crap being dosed out about 180grm vinyl being the best thing since sliced bread and that it seems to justify charging £25 upwards for the so-called privilege !!!! Dont bother, its just marketing rubbish. There are plenty of good record specialists about but, the art is to know which ones sell a good product for a sensible price and not an over inflated price ;)

The old vinyls through to the early 70's were all really thick and heavy as standard issue - they didnt penalise you for the privilege back then for owning a quality made item !!!! My early Deep Purple, Led Zep and Pink Floyd albums are really good examples of them (Harvest & Atlantic if I remember correctly????). Keep your eyes open at junk sales etc - they really can be good places. Buy a good record cleaner and try to get one of the little cleaning arms with the brush on the end that cleans your vinyl as it spins on the T-Table. ;)

Welcome to AOS !!!
