Yes the last one is without doubt the best IMHO.

you might find this interesting
spot the difference

it was pointed out to me that the sign post took away from the image... iagreed, so i removed it
There appears to be a tiny, TINY difference between the two - a bit like comparing two otherwise similar interconnect cables.. To my taste, irrelevant, but I'm a philistine where photography is concerned... :/

Indeed the sign does ruin the composition....good call.

im a bit of a perfectionist, the sign bugged me but when someone pointed it out... well back then i was pretty poor at photoshop, i think it took me about 2 hours to get rid of it
Hi Hamish,
First point: -
I liked your first pic best in your thread opener - just the sort of thing I like to try but never get quite right  . I love the images possible by capturing reflected light on water at night. I've got a few of St Ives harbour at night (a favourite holiday spot of our family), taken from various high vantage points but I should love to get one as clear and well exposed as yours.
Second point: -
Your 'Spot the Difference' sepia pics are slightly different to my eye, not just the sign removal ( which 'makes' the picture), but the one with the sign in place seems (to me) to have a wider range of shades (there must be a technical term for this  ), but the whites are brighter, definitely, and the darker areas are, possibly, slightly 'muddier', (another technical term escapes me  ). I would guess that this is as a result of your early Photoshop efforts.
For me, you can post as many of your early or late pics and experiments as you like - I love to see/hear the results of any skilled practioner, almost irrespective of what their particular 'bag' is - keep 'em coming.
Cheers,

the correct exposure of a night time shot like that is a hard task to achive without any post process
i, if memory serves, would have used a smaller apeture and quite a long exposure on a tripod. the sky would have been washed out with light polution, this can usually be corected by uping the contrast using curves
these days i would use lightroom and just up the "black" level
if you have a digital image, but dont have the software i would love to have a tinker my self if you want to email me an image dave?
there could well be a slight difference between the 2 sepia images the sign post was removed on a different computer ... my mini laptop isnt good enough to show the differance and i cant be arse to go upstairs and have a look on my photo pc.. so il take your word for it!
Hmmm, well I'm no photographer and I use a simple Canon Powershot SX1 IS.
Here are a few low light shots which I'm quite pleased with that I took with no special setting and hand held on a recent cruise to Iceland and Norway. Remember, in July, there is not alot of true darkness close to the Artic Circle.

My only real quibble is the 4:3 ratio of the first 2 images, but that us certainly nit something to worry about (I find it a format that suits little composition) I also would have perhaps put the boat within the lower third as aposed to transecting the bottom 2 thirds, and more toward the right a bit - on the last image... Nothing else stands out as obvious problems. The first and last are the best in my books...

Hi Will
Love the paintings, the way you have captured the light is amazing. The graduations, intensity and reflections are very good. I too wish I could paint like that.
Interesting that there are so many artists on AOS.
If you view a photo the same way as a painting, paying attention to subject, composition and perspective you can't go to far wrong.
