View Full Version : Cable for 99p
Received this in the post yesterday.
I won it for 99p in an auction.
Has anyone any experience of it?

Unlikely Box but great for 99p, even for a spare for system testing.

It's The Silver Anniversary speaker cable that's the problem. Some of QEDs other cables are very decent. I use the Silver Spiral interconnects sometimes, they are good.

Hoorah; so I got a bargain.
Now all I have to do is decide where to plug it in (Clean answers only please)!

It does not look like a QED cable to me.
More of a Systemline SAIC, like it says on the packet.
Who cares, as long as it works for you though.

There is a connection between Systemline and QED, Bob Abraham, who founded QED and still does R&D for them, is also the Brand Director of Systemline which is an A/V install company.
Box, the cable you got is frankly worth about .99p it's just about yhe same level as the free cables you used to get with kit. I'm a bit confused as to, A. Why you would want it and B. Why someone, who according to their profile, lives in Steinbach, which last time I looked is near Winnipeg, is buying a cable from Wales when the postage would bring the price up to more than you would spend on a reasonable cable locally. That coupled with the general "flakyness" of your post leaves me to feel that something is not quite right.

That explains why they are both in the description, thank you for that.
The reason I bought it is to connect two of my items together and I do not yet have enough.
I will test it and let you know if it was a bargain, or just about the value I paid. As I am only risking less than a pound, it cannot be a disaster can it?
There is no such word as flakyness.
If you meant flakiness I have never touched cocaine and resent the intimation quite frankly.

Looking at your posts here and on TAS you are flaky as in unreliable and inconsistent. Where does cocaine come into it? Mods can you do something about this pretty obvious troll please? I for one am fed up with this utter bandwidth and time wasting nonsense.
Steinbach is also in Germamy...near Frankfurt . he said he had other addresses so may be in the one in this country. Until Box does something deemed against site rules or is adjudged to be as you say "a troll" then he is currently free to post in the same way everyone else is. Marco as owner and administrator will be the decision maker on this as its his bandwidth
who 's having a bad day ? ....if you don't like the post or poster why waste your time and effort in answering? or is it paul who's really the troll?
to answer the questions asked .....yes it probably will work ....will it sound any good, only you will be able to tell ....A bargain ? possibly not. As to diminishing returns ...that depends. all copper coaxial style cable will sound similar so an expensive cable will have a similar sound to the cheap. This is in my opinion why cables have a bad reputation . Change the construction to a twisted unshielded pair in silver/ptfe with good plugs then they will be worth the £50-100 you'd need to spend.

Very useful answer thank you. So if I buy several copper cables, I will not find much to pick between them.
If a cable is unshielded will it not pick up noise though?
It is not as clear cut as silver versus copper is it though, otherwise I would still have my Q.E.D. Anniversary connected, all in all quite confusing.
What do you think to the idea of buying some RG6 cable, some gold plated RCA plugs and making some leads?

Guys lets chill.
Zanash those comments aimed at Paul were bang out of order. Paul Stewart is a valued member, very knowledgeable and experienced and certainly no troll. So I would ask you to apologise for saying such.
Re ignoring folks you don't like on here, well that's not always possible but in principle the better thing to do and sound advice. Just because we all like music and audio gear does not mean we will all get on, and some folks way of being and style of posting will wind folks up but unless obvious transgressions are made by members the mod team would prefer to keep a watching brief - so we would ask that folks try and take the more pragmatic approach than poke at each other or call each other names.

If you want to go to the trouble, why not? Though RG-6/U is quite thick: it has an outer diameter of 8.4mm, so you will need to find some phono plugs that can accomodate cable of that size. Good luck with the project.

It is surprising how irritating one person can be and how it can spoil the enjoyment of what has always been a place where folks seem to be equally sincere. Also very difficult to ignore in some cases as their choices rather do make them stand out by accident or design.

I make my own cables using either RG58 or RG223 cable. Both have an outer diameter of <6mm. There's nothing wrong in using RG6, it's just that the cables might be a bit stiff and unwieldy in short lengths.

I believe RG6 has a solid central core. Not something I'd use myself. It is more prone to failure, as audio cables tend to get moved around and solid cores snap. Also I seem to prefer the results from all stranded cable. Preferably all copper, not plated.

See emboldened text in blue. That's it pretty much in a nutshell, folks. Being 'different' doesn't automatically make one a troll, and we don't ban people here for being different.
I would also take this opportunity to remind folks that there is an ignore function, so please, rather than moan to others about someone that annoys you, USE it. With a large membership, such as we have here, it's impossible to get on with everyone, so personality clashes will inevitably occur from time to time.
Therefore, the key is to manage for yourself who you choose to interact with, and who you don't; not put that onus onto the admin or mod team. Our role isn't to judge people, merely to ensure that all members behave in line with our ethos.
Trust me, if necessary, we will act against anyone here found to be a deliberate disruptive influence. At the moment, we are happy that's not the case, although that situation is continually being monitored.

Cable delivered to the door for £2.24 I guess is more accurate than 99p. That's ok if you don't come across hifi too often so it's a good deal.
Having said that I've found on the street just as good Cambridge Audio cables and been given better cables for free with stuff. So it's swings and roundabouts depending on your exposure to stuff.
There are lots of bargains like that though on ebay always passing by - there are some websites which search for 99p listings at the end of their listing time so you can aim the search to cables if you like too.

Indeed. Also, how many times do I have to say USE THE IGNORE FEATURE, if someone annoys you, before it penetrates?
Therefore, folks, either do that, and add 'Box' to your ignore list, or keep quiet, as this squabbling is really childish. Any more negative remarks made against him will be removed without further warning, as at the very least, it is blatant thread crapping.

Given the choice I would use Neutrik 'Profi' plugs, they are expensive (~ £15 a pair), but are, IMO, probably the best there is. Some like Eichmann 'bullet plugs', I don't - in fact I loath them!
But then I don't like RCA phono plugs anyway: they are a lousy design that sadly have become the de facto industry standard.
For RCA plugs, I never use anything other than KLE Innovations these days
http://kleinnovations.com/ easy to solder, good contacts, and nice tight fit.

Hi Graeme.
Have you tried the MSAudio plugs? The gold plated contact ones (opposed to Rhodium) are very good. Way cheaper than KLE as far as I know and are practically the same design.
Thanks, I did try one set, but for a while they were very hard to get hold of and the KLE's are always available and work great! You are right though that they are more expensive. Ironic that were talking about them in a thread on 99p cables :-)
The MS Audio plugs that I have seen, had a metal barrel whilst the KLE's are plastic bodied. On the whole I prefer not to have too much metal in the plugs.
as to plugs ......those mentioned are ok ...tad expensive but hay ho
the thing about plugs is the less nasty metal in the signal path the better .....good metals ...copper silver bad metals brass steel chrome ....gold flashing has little bearing just looks pretty ...
oddly you can get good result with 30p plugs [the right ones !] in a previous life [so it seems] I built a series of cables all with same wire ..just different plugs the best were in decending order.... ...eichmann silver bullets were best followed by copper bullets ....then any silver plugs .... what was a surprise were these [rs stock number548-9082] then we get to brass plugs best of the worst ..profi expensive .... neutrk nys series almost indistinguishable from profi [currently at about £2 each ]..at a fraction of the cost. Tiffany types ..[very nice to work with and ptfe insulation]
Hi Graeme,
The MS Audio plugs that I have seen, had a metal barrel whilst the KLE's are plastic bodied. On the whole I prefer not to have too much metal in the plugs.
Me too, which is one of the reasons why I use the MS Audio Starline plugs. The barrel/body is in fact of a nylon/glass fibre construction. Try placing a magnet against it, and you'll see that it is totally non-magnetic. The only metal on MC Audio plugs is in the conductor itself :)

Yup, I know what you mean. However, ultimately I prefer using plugs with either solid-copper or solid-silver conductors, as I can clearly hear the difference over the brass used on the super-cheap variety, and when you can get plugs of the quality of the MS Audio ones, for around £3 a pop, it seems churlish to use anything else! ;)

I've used the MS plugs, very good value they are too. However, I've also used the KLEs and certainly wouldn't say the MS are superior, quite the opposite in fact.
The screw on barrel of the MS plugs is plated brass (mine certainly are) - brass is entirely non ferrous so I'm afraid the magnet test doesn't show anything other than its not made of steel (but then I don't know if any that are).
I don't really understand your later comments regarding plug contact materials Marco - all your preferred MS plugs use plated tellurium copper and not solid silver or gold.

Hi Mark,
I've used the MS plugs, very good value they are too.
We'll have to agree to differ on our views about the MS vs. KLEs. I've listened to two identical Klotz MC5000 cables, one pair fitted with MS plugs, and the other KLEs (yes, that's how sad I can get sometimes, lol), and can assure you that, in the context of my system, the MS plugs were notably sonically superior.
I also conducted the same test in a friend's system (rather different from mine) and obtained the same result: the KLEs sounded more 'hi-fi', with a brighter sound, but one that was deemed as ultimately less musically satisfying.
Regarding the barrel of the MS plugs, if you click on this link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MS-Audio-Star-Line-Gold-Plated-Tellurium-Copper-RCA-Plugs-2-Pairs-/221815493602?clk_rvr_id=878149250100&rmvSB=true&afsrc=1&nma=true&si=ARvcCWcKFTwKzKSdAtDI0Lvdb3E%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
....you'll see that it describes the "socket locker", which I presume is the barrel, as being made of "extremely durable glass fiber Nylon". Indeed, a key part of the design of the plug is to minimise the use of metal, due to issues relating to inductance and capacitance, as well as eddy currents. Therefore, it would totally defeat that purpose by making the barrel from metal.
Mine certainly don't appear to be made from metal, as you can usually tell be the weight.... The barrels I have on my plugs weigh next to nothing.
I don't really understand your later comments regarding plug contact materials Marco - all your preferred MS plugs use plated tellurium copper and not solid silver or gold.
Sorry, Mark, I didn't mention gold. Here's what I wrote earlier:
However, ultimately I prefer using plugs with either solid-copper or solid-silver conductors, as I can clearly hear the difference over the brass used on the super-cheap variety...
As far as I know, the conductor pin on the MS plugs is made from solid (Tellurium) copper, not plated. However, the point I was making was that I can clearly hear the difference between using plugs with BRASS conductors, and ones made from either solid-copper, or solid-sliver, such as the Eichmann Silver Bullet plugs I use on my Yannis tonearm cables.
Marco.
The "socket locker" is the bit that fits around the RCA socket, and it is plastic - nylon.
As far as I know, the exterior barrel is metallic - the ones in front of me now certainly appear to be.
Indeed, I've just looked up the construction of the conductor pin on the MS plugs and found this:
"We choose UNS C14500 tellurium copper for cental conductor pin, this material have very low resistance and amazing sound charactristics. Hollow sharp central pin will get lower noise and open sound. Both features can only seen on most expensive RCA plug products.
UNS C14500 tellurium copper: 99.5% copper, 0.5% Te and 0.008% phosphorse. It have the same conductivity to pure copper, much hugher hardness and shown oxidation resistance. "
See here: http://goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21311121782559
So, to all intents and purposes, it is solid-copper.
Marco.
The "socket locker" is the bit that fits around the RCA socket, and it is plastic - nylon.
Yes, re-reading it again, I see where you're coming from. It's a little confusing though, as a result of the language barrier, in terms of what the "socket locker" being referred to actually is.
However, the barrels I have here feel too light to be metallic, although I can't rule it out. It does seem rather counterproductive, however, to use metallic barrels (if that indeed is the case), when the whole design philosophy of the plugs is to minimise the use of metal...
In that case, why not just fit plastic-type barrels, like Eichmann or KLE do? :hmm:
Regardless, the MS audio plugs, to my ears, sound better - that's why I sent you the KLEs back. I also remember you arrived at a similar conclusion, and decided that the extra cost of the KLEs wasn't warranted.
I really wanted to prefer the KLEs, as they are purported as being higher quality, but in the end, my ears decided differently! :)
Marco.
Yep. The benefit for the additional cost was just not worth it.
I'll attack an old barrel with a hacksaw/blow torch. That will show what the material is better (after I try a magnet).
No worries, that'll be interesting. If they are metallic, it's the lightest metal used on plugs I've ever felt!

Mind you don't hurt yourself now Kevin , you're needed for other duties. :D
I've been reading through this thread and have to agree with you and Marco . I also tried the KLE plugs on the MC5000 cable and came to the conclusion that the MS Audio plugs were better suited to this cable .
I also tried both on the Klotz AC110 cable and preferred the KLE plugs so go figure
As far as I can tell the outer sleeves on the MS Audio plugs are made of some kind of metal , don't know what it is though .

That's a good point about the plugs suiting the sonic characteristics of the partnering cable, which I'm sure is valid. It certainly demonstrates that there is no universal 'best' in the plug world, the same as there isn't in any other area of audio! :)
Interesting that you preferred the KLEs, used with the AC110, which I found had a slightly more laid back sound, in comparison with the MC5000. In that respect, I can well imagine that the brighter, more 'leading-edgy' sound of the KLEs, would be a more synergistic match with the AC110.

Agreed re synergy mate . I'm also using a Rega DAC and Brio R combination at the moment . The original recommended interconnects for Rega equipment (the Couple) was made using Klotz AC110 and they sound every bit as good as the MC5000/MS Audio interconnects in this system .
Marco, I'm sorry but I don't care what it says in the product description but the barrel of your favoured plugs is clearly brass to anyone who knows the slightest about materials - it's certainly blindingly obvious that it's not plastic as the KLE is. I should perhaps add that I don't think this makes any sonic difference at all and is entirely a sonic 'red herring'. Honestly, I don't know why you make these inaccurate technical statements and then defend them to the hilt.
I'm not making "extremely inaccurate technical statements and defending them to the hilt"; I'm simply quoting what the manufacturer says the pins are made from. What else should I do instead, not being an 'expert' on materials?
The exact same information is quoted about the Graham Nalty 'Legacy BN3' plugs: http://www.gnlegacy.co.uk/gn3.html which the MS plugs are based on (or perhaps vice versa). So you're saying that both manufacturers are guilty of misrepresentation/lying?
We'll just have to agree to differ then, as unless you can provide conclusive proof that the conductor pins aren't made from (95%) copper, I'll believe what is stated in the product spec! ;)
As an aside, are the conductor pins, in your expert opinion, on the KLEs and Eichmanns made of solid-silver or copper, depending on the specific models chosen, or if not, are you saying that they are plated, too?
Marco.
Lol... Just noticed that you're talking about barrels and I'm talking about pins! :eyebrows:
I'm not saying that the barrels on the MS plugs are definitely not made from metal, simply that they appear not to be, to my untrained eyes. However, I'm perfectly happy to concede that they are in fact made of brass, when provided with sufficient evidence, such as Kevin coming back and confirming such, after he's butchered one.
My issue was more about the pin material, which you said was plated (or not made from solid copper), when that appears not to be the case.
Even in that respect though, if there is sufficient evidence that proves the pin material isn't solid copper, I'm happy to concede that point, too. At the end of the day, all that matters to me is that the MS plugs sound the best to my ears, in the context of my system and partnering cables.
Marco.
Has anyone any experience of these plugs, I cannot see how they stay on the cable?

I prefer this style of RCA phono plug.
They use a collet to grip the outer sleeving of the cable, and as such, they only have a very limited range in the outer diameter of the cable they can accomodate. It is thus imperative to choose the appropriate size of plug to fit the cable.
The outer insulation is stripped back ~1cm and passed through the back nut and then the collet. The screening braid is picked and splayed out at the thicker end of the collet. Then the wires of the screening braid are trimmed so as not to protrude beyond the radial edge of the collet.
The centre conductor is soldered to the solder 'bucket' of the connector pin. The longer sleeve is passed over the centre pin/dielectric support, so that the slots are on the same side as the pin, then the whole assembly is inserted into the outer metalwork of the connector and the back nut tightend up.

They have a tiny grub screw with an Allen head to tighten on to the cable Box.

That's not obvious from the photos. The KLE and MS 'bullet' plugs do, but that's not what's shown here.
Has anyone any experience of these plugs...
To be brutally honest, they're cheap and nasty things, which use way too much metal in their construction, and I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Go for the MS Audio plugs, as discussed above. They're pretty inexpensive and sound superb! :)

I've just performed the infallible tooth test and the MS plugs have a metal barrel. Mine have the rhodium plated tellurium copper pins, and the "socket locker" is red or white plastic, presumably nylon. The ground connection metal is not specified, so I would expect it to be brass.

Ah sorry , I thought we were talking about the MS Audio plugs . That's what I meant . Apologies

That's not what was asked. Anyway, plugs similar to those shown were used on the experimental cables you auditioned recently, of which some were very favourably received.
Personally, I wouldn't touch 'bullet' plugs with a bargepole. :ner:

The barrel is not connected to anything if you wire the plug up correctly!

Lol - the difference between you and me is that I judge things almost solely on how they sound, not on how 'practical' or otherwise they are to work with, or how much the design conforms to my 'scientific rationality'! ;)
How much better would said (undoubtedly excellent) cables of yours in question sound with better plugs fitted than that brass-constructed pishanto you use? :ner:
Marco.

The signal conducting surfaces are gold-plated brass (inner) or gold-plated phosphor bronze (outer), just like your 'bullet' plugs. As are the sockets with which they mate.
The only bullet plugs I use, matey, are on my Yannis tonearm cables. The plugs on all my interconnects are from MS audio. In summary, the two things that matter most to me about RCA plugs are:
1) Preferably the only metal used in their construction is on the conductor itself. Every other part of their design should be non-metallic. Lightweight is best!
2) The conductor pin should be constructed of either solid-copper or solid-silver, for maximum conductivity and signal transfer.
Locking barrels aside, the MS Audio plugs tick those two boxes, and the Eichmann SBs fulfil all of the above requirements. Job done! :)
Marco.

Richard,
I have explained my actions were not meant soley for your benefit, you quoted that the barrel was metal, i simply extended with the fact that if the plug was wired correctly the metal barrel had no physical connection to any of the wires or pins within!
