when playing the dar!ed thing just stopped playing. i rebooted and looked on screen and an error near end of startup says fail..startpar returned failure... not happeded b4. seems us....do i need a ne volumio image or is this a hardware problem??

hoping one of the pi geniuses know this:)

Could be a corrupt sd card, would do no harm to try a fresh image. Are the led's on the Pi and DAC lit?

when playing the dar!ed thing just stopped playing. i rebooted ....

Did you reboot for the menu or switch it off?
Had problems a few times with it stopping and a Menu reboot didn't help - just a real switch off and leave it for a minute or two before back on ... otherwise, yep - a fresh card should sort it (I hope so :)

not sure where the lights are as its in a box. i put a fresh image in but it comes up with same failure. the pi seems to be wirking as im getting control from pad and sound from tv but not out of dac. take it the dac is gone?

Not sounding good, might pay to take the lid off the case and check dac is firmly connected and if the green led is lit.

Yes Barry, I will have a look tomorrow but looks like dac is at fault. bugger. funny but 2 or 3 times now recently the sound has gone of for a second or 3, then come back. this time it went off and didnt come back. if I had tried the telly first Id have saved myself some time. nexy question is the iq dac the best one to replace it with or are their better lug n play versions that dont need a degree in linux:eyebrows:

Have you updated your system (using raspi-update or sommit)?

I think the i2s drivers used by the various pi boards are not included in the mainline linux kernel, so if you update from a source that's not part of what you're distribution (by volumio, moode or whatever) uses then the dac drivers won't work (as they're compiled against a specific kernel).

It would be great to see them rolled in to the mainline so that any raspberian distro supports them out of the box but that's the next step I guess.

struth
24-07-2015, 19:26
No I did nowt. Was listening happily when sound just went. Tried reboot etc no joy.
I had another copy of volumio made in caee so tried it.. same. Ssme failure too but the thing did set up and when I tried a songvdound came from tv. Nothing out of dac. Will open tomorrow and check lights plugs etc. If buying a new dac is samevone best or are they others better. Was looking at a 196 24 for 21 quid

Yes, it plugs in just like the iq dac, it appears to have fixed volume and no mucking around with alas mixer. There is a a couple of links for it in it's thread in digital expressions.

error is ... fail..startpar returned failure

mikmas
31-07-2015, 12:56
just a thought but do you have a USB DAC you could try with the barebones Pi (i.e. with the new DAC disconnected) ?

At least then you'd know if the problem was just with the Pi 12s output - a new Pi is a damn sight cheaper than binning both DACs ;)

struth
31-07-2015, 13:06
well the sound comes out of the pi from the hdmi section into tv. not tried a opi but im presuming itcwould work as well as both are digital. as the new dac is dead like the old iq dac i am presuming they are both ok...unlikely to get 2 different dacs with the same problem. that leaves whatever interfaces the data from pi to dac or software. havevtried 2 different sd cards with volumio and both are same. even tried different leads and into a known good input on the pre.

kinda stumped Mike.

Sorry if it's elsewhere in the thread but I don't think you've posted the whole error message, startpar is 'start parallel services' but you haven't told us which service is failing, what does it say after 'failure:' in the error message (I'm not sure that this isn't a bum steer anyway)

can you log in and do: cat /boot/config.txt and post the results back for us?

It should have a line in it that reads: dtoverlay=hifiberry-dac

edit: might also be worth checking out: uname -a

so we can see what kernel you're running

I cant now as its in shed. my linux is zero but it didnt say much more.. it was very near the end of the set up.. of what Ive read people say it is not a problem and should still work but mine doesnt.

not sure what a cat /boot/config.txt is tbh lol. It wasnt coming up to my knowledge before it packed it any time I saw it setting up so dunno. The new one should be here tomorrow(or so they say and will check if it comes up again. trouble is it is on my tv not a pc so cant copy / paste it.

Fair enuff.

I strongly recommend to the folks who are playing with pi's to get a few rudimentary linux chops, as it really makes trouble shooting and support much easier (and means you don't have to keep buying new ones if you can't get something working!).

At the least ya'll should get down with being able to log in to your boxes remotely over ssh (using putty if you're on window) so we can see what's going on under the hood.

cat /boot/config.txt is basically saying 'show me (conCATenate) the contents of the file called config.txt in the directory called boot' somewhat unsurprisingly (given its name and location) the file is the configuration for how the pi should boot and contains all the juicy detail you need, to check what's going on and control which soundcard / output is used (along with a whole host of other stuff)

Yes, its a problem but at my age, programming is just a tad too far for me. Good at most things but pc language has always beat me.
I would have thought that the only thing you could change was the volumio program, but obviously not, which shows my linux abilities. Personally i think its a hardware problem as it broke down in mid song as it were. Ive forgotten the word you type in to get the bars up for adjusting already. Old age can be a bugger, especially when youve been hit on the head as often as I have:eek:

A few more tunes early evening as the neighbour was oot:eyebrows: Have to say that this new pi dac is the business, and sure the extra memory is helping it on too. Timbre is precise yet relaxed. Also an almost 3d effect at times, if thats possible; Diana Krall's voice sounded absolutely devine, with a certain something in the voice now that was missing b4. Also the slight hardness at the very top octaves in the likes of Annie Lennox ave been sweetened with out need for the MF buffer. Currently a very happy bunny sonically at moment

Does it actually have a dedicated driver or just a dedicated 'switch' with the correct name for the card (that actually just switches on the hifiberry driver)?

I suspect the latter as the release notes say: Add Audiophonics I-Sabre DAC ES9023 TCXO to audio device db - adding the name to the database isn't the same as writing a dedicated driver.

EDIT: Indeed the Audiophonics site says that the card uses the hifiberry+ driver - if they had their own surely they'd want to promote that one?

struth
04-08-2015, 08:12
On volumio the sabre doesnt work on the hi plus or mine doesn't . works on the hiberry. Ive no idea but it is individually there. Will maybe find out if it's any better when card comes today.
Interesting point

Rothchild
04-08-2015, 08:37
I have a terradac 9023 card on mine (running dietpi) and it too works with the hifiberry (not +) driver.

Having seen the reference on the Audiophonics site this morning I intend to test the 'berry+ driver this evening. I'll report back if it works / makes any difference (can't imagine it will as it sounds pretty good already)

I think the point is that the 'hifiberry' driver is not a driver for the hifiberry per-se, rather it's an i2s driver, that had its development supported by hifiberry, so they picked the name. The bottom line is that i2s compliant chips should work with it (hence it working with both the sabre and burr-brown implementations of Pi soundcards).

struth
04-08-2015, 15:38
Well, after much anticipation I imaged a card with Moode, and slotted it home, switched on and updated library. initial the player graphics on the tablet were not right for some odd reason and no menus were there or for that matter controls bar browse. I got sound but it was tinny and weak.
after a bit of fiddling /giving up and retrying, I got the full screen come up and proceeded to set up s in the directions for moode 2.1. selected i sabre dac and rebooted. the alsa disappeared and was getting no sound(this turned out to be a blind and was not important, even though the instructions said otherwise). this set of instructions were tbh a lot of bull, as I needed to go also into a section to add some stuff then had to find a button to switch the sound on again. Some nice tunes are now emanating from this finally. its not as intuitive as Volumio .....

I will need to have a good listen over the next few days to see if I think it better though.
Graphics seem to be quite a step up and much more detail, also the adjustments n menu are nigh on endless.

Am starting to enjoy the sound of this a bit more now. its very different to the iq dac. as is the moode v volumio. Instruments are firmly in their positions and its very hi end in style. a lot of this is the moode being able to stretch the dac to its capabilities. Graphics etc are much better too.
After saying all that in praise of moode, i still hanker a bit for volumios drive and presence.

Hi Grant,

Funnily enough I've started using MoOde this week too, main reason for my move away from Volumio was the fact that my BubbleuPnP app on my phone kept losing Volumio as a Renderer, so far it has picked up MoOde every time I've gone to use it.

I too was thinking of the Audiophonics Dac to try, as I have a spare Pi, but will wait until I'm back from holiday. Mind you the new iQaudio Digiamp + looks tempting to try, would do fine on my PC room system I think.

All I did was change the upsampling and it just hung on updating MPD. So now it's simply not appearing in the browser, white screen of death. Ii can still access alsamixer though... very odd... if anyone has any advice, do let me know.

Might give Moode a try.

Hi,

Installs exactly the same as Volumio. Just format card, and load the MoOde image onto it, currently on 2.1 I think, I'm running 2.0 and working great, the web controller seems to be better than the Volumio one too, I had issues with that hanging and unable to catalogue my music. Going over to MoOde cured that.

Thanks, Grant.. Up to this morning Volumio has been pretty solid. But I think it got it's knickers in a twist with setting upsampling for some mad reason.

Are these the bes instructions for moode? http://moodeaudio.org/docs/tcmods-readme.txt - I hope it will fit on my SD card because Rune didn't, it was about 3 bytes out of space. Must be a crappy SD card.

Also, is there a mirror site for the moode 2.1 build? - it's taking hours to download.

I have my volume set as HARDWARE and at 86 which is 0db gain using my iQAudio DAC, it is supposed to be superior to the software setting, not sure if the it's different on the Audiophonics DAC that you have Grant?

I also have both the other settings in ALsamixer at 100. I just use my amp to control volume or if using Airplay on ipad I use the iPad volume control.

Mike.

hi mike. wasnt sure if i had a hardware vc lol so just using it as i did with volumio. might play with that later. alsa disappeared but not sure why...

Moode has been playing now for about an hour.... all good. :)

Some of the options could do with a better description under the (?) symbol though.

Many thanks for you help, Grant/chaps... all good.

Yes, it said 3hrs to download for me too but then it downloaded in 10 mins this morning.

Got mine on again now tge neighbour has bogged off lol. listening to some paul simon stuff i know very well. Becoming more impressed. as i said separation and soundstage are very good. depth of stage has increased. the buffering being reduced seems better. not tried going to hardware vc yet....not sure how that works tbh.

If so then the vol control of that is your hardware control. I think you should indeed set this to hardware control in the settings - that should make for a better sq.

Not sure how reducing the buffer size would change anything though, does it compress it on the fly?

Indeed Graeme.

It's great isn't it... why the hell doesn't it just log an error on to the SD card or something? Grr... any coder with brain cell flying free would do this in debug, so why not in the release.

These things are great but you have to be veeeeerry delicate with them which is poor.

Nah, just like Volumio, Grant.. it won't let you in through the browser. Through Putty, yes!... bonkers!

The software defaulted to the wrong dac. funny because when I replaced software it defaulted to the wrong one too. Then after I got the new one working I refitted it with software to see if that was the problem and it defaulted to the right one without me doing anything... Volumio has always been a bit buggy with me.

So you now have two working setups; one with the IQaudiO DAC and one with the Sabre chip? - that's good, and will be very useful for comparisons.

Yes, although the new Pi is the latest 900mhz 1 gb version, I think the other one is lightly slower and less memory. Cant get a dedicated box for the sabre dac at moment so just using the old one with one side off for now. May make something up later, or look for something nice. lucky me:eyebrows:

Latency (buffer size / samplerate x2) ought to have no effect on SQ, it's not even really a meaningful issue for a playback box. (I'll spare the long explanation for now but it's not...)

If anything, a larger buffer should better, it removes strain from the processor and means that things like the interface and mpd using processing won't cause dropouts (especially if you're upsampling).

EDIT: Oh yeah, setting your buffer to 0 will likely do weird things, the smallest buffer I'm offered on my RME driver on my studio machine is 32kb (and my studio machine can't run any meaningful size of project at that setting without glitches)

I would agree with that theory. If the buffer doesn't compress and decompress lossy then the data should be as identical as the stream.

I would like to know the long explanation if you have the time, Marc.

Hi,

make sure you haven't got the volume set at 100 on that setting as it gives it too much gain, although not sure if DAC dependant but the setting I thought was best was 86 which on the iQaudio ADC is 0db, not sure if the Audiophonics one is the same?

Inspired by you intrepid explorers decided to give MoOde another go ....

After much pratting about this afternoon the end result = total pants :steam:
The database struggles to update even a simple flash drive let alone my SSD and when it does I get no pertinent data - i.e. no track names or artists let alone pretty album pics. All tracks are instead listed as a 'Streaming source'. Tried with WAV files and AIFF but no joy - it won't even list station names when I add them to the playlist.

It may be prettier than Volumio but in my experience it sucks big time

Lol, I'm not sure I ought to after you've summed it up quite so succinctly!

The same sums are done in the same order regardless of the buffer size - so yes, no loss.

There's a good primer on what latency is here and how they relate to buffer size and sample rate: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201530

Note that they're talking about input and 'round-trip' latency (how quickly you can get a sound back out of a computer after you've put it in) the only effect of a bigger buffer on a playback system is that you might find the controls get a bit sluggish (just because that's the time it takes to fill the buffer and start/stop playing) and it may use a bit more RAM.

well the you're doing it wrong then lol, it scanned both my NAS and the SSD connected to my NAS no problem, make sure once you've added the drives that you get a GREEN TICK on the settings page where you added the drives, if you get a RED X then it hasn't picked up the drive location(s).

Once I detected mine with the correct naming it scanned through 9000+ tracks no problem ;)

For me it is much more stable than Volumio as it would just hang at times and my android uPnP app couldn't see Volumio most of the time, with MoOde it works every single day I've tried it, the Radio Stations are better, the interface is better, and it can see my Library which was another issue I had with Volumio, and I'm pretty sure it sounds better too.

Each to their own I suppose, but I for one won't be going back to Volumio

I don't use a NAS (can't be arsed with the expense) just plug in USB drives
Everything peachy, creamy with Volumio and has worked fine for a couple of months now, just cannot get MoOde to perform at all - (once I've summoned up the patience to download the bloated image file...)

Would love it to be different given that MoOde has radio stations I actually want to listen to ... but alas it's not to be :(

Yeah, the sabre dac doesn't have a mixer so it's just straight through (which is better imo - I probably am a bit more 'flat earth' than many around here) - mine seems to spit out plenty of gain.

I have a dozen songs I copied to the sd card, no art work because they were not in a folder with a image file. It's the same principle for any drive, all of my music files are on my NAS drive connected to my main computer up stairs, then streamed to the pi down stairs. My folder setup is artist folder, album folder, song files and image file, all art work is showing on my setup. Should be no different for a connected usb drive.

Rothchild
09-08-2015, 16:26
Yeah, it works fine if the artwork is in the folder with the choons, doesn't seem to work with ones where the artwork is embedded in the file (as it is with some of my FLACs.

I keep all my files as
music folder
music folder - artist name
music folder - artist name - artist/album

with the artwork and any cue files etc in with the album.

I also played with the different driver settings and, as predicted, they are just basically pretty labels, both the sabre drivers actually just load the hifiberry driver - so the odds of hearing a difference due to the driver selection are pretty marginal!
