View Full Version : WTD: Speakers for a small room

Must be OK in a small room, close to boundaries, playing Rock and Electronica primarily.
Will be driven by a Quad 504-2 power amp and I like a fairly neutral presentation with good imaging.
Don't need prodigious bass and not fussed whether stand mount or floor standers. Really liked my old Castle Conway II's as a rough guide to presentation.
Cabs must be in reasonable condition and drivers in good working order.
Budget to about £ 150.
Got anything laying around unused or unloved ?
Ta.

Saw those Paul. Really look nice and I think would fit the bill but just a bit rich for me at the mo :(

Thanks for making me aware of these Geoff.
I used to own a pair of these back in the day and seem to remember them as being pretty good. I'm not too sure I want to go back over old ground but let me think about it a bit.
Cheers

I find the tweeters a little shouty for my taste so probably better for electronic / rock? They're not cosmetically great though noting that was a requirement. You're welcome to come and have a listen.
Grundig Hifi Box 600? A 3 way stand monitor with big soundstage with a very transparent and fast presentation. Hugely overlooked by the non-connoisseurs...
Geoff - re the Tannoys... Was the Oxford model a larger one from the same series?
How much do you want for them and could they be sent?

Had them before Bernard and they are a little bit too thin / hi-fi sounding for me.

Hi mike,
I have a pair of Audiomaster MLS-1 speakers, in excellent condition, sound a lot like the Audiomaster LS3/5a, but with more bass, and no stupid price tag, £125

That's right. The Oxford was very similar but with the 10" mid / bass.
OK Geoff.

Here you go. They have some scratches on top and the metal surround part on the mid bass cones are a bit oxidised. The grilles were foam and are long since disintegrated I'm afraid.

Pricewise, I can't find any sold prices so not sure. Are they worth £40?

I haven't a clue to their value either Geoff but I would imagine they are worth £ 40, so I will take them please.

Thanks Mike. Sent you a pm.
Bloody cheek:) I asked about them as against the others and someone else jumps in and claims 'em..
Got too many speakers anyways, but something with a strong treble might have helped with my gummy ears...

Sorry Dave. I thought he offered any of them up as options for me :)
Anyway, I understand you have some nice IMF's waiting to be sorted :)

Managed to bag myself a minty pair of Castle Kendal II's at a good price. Still want your Tannoys though Gordon :)
I don't think I have ever owned a pair of speakers so set-up critical, but once I got them dialled in (a good few hours of cm by cm adjustment !), they went from dire (massive disappointment) to WOW ! Very impressed indeed.
Very clear, with decent bass and fantastic imaging. Just do that musically right thing. Even better than the Conways.
One very happy dude :)
