I just spotted some tumbleweed passing through my initial thread so thought I'd give an update here on who I got around to seeing at the weekend. Bare with me.
Friday evening I watched Public Service Broadcasting. Pretty good. And I have heard them a little bit prior to that but really didn't realise how Prog they actually sound. Anyone else think that? Then followed Jon Hopkins. Goodish, but a bit predictable and the sound was somewhat lumpy/muddy. Saw Polar Bear in the BBC 3 Late Junction Stage late on and they were superb. Jazzy in a Red Snapper kind of way. Brilliant.
Saturday started with Drenge and I came out of there feeling a bit deflated! They ticked all the right boxes for sure and actually it was pretty damn good Rock n Roll. But I couldn't help thinking that sixty years on, Rock n Roll just hasn't moved on. Believe it or not my mood was lifted the moment Sun Kil Moon rang out their first few chords a little later. I have always loved Mark Kozelek's confessional songwriting since the Red House Painters. Great storytelling, which kind of reminded me of Rap in it's delivery at times. They did a great version of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 'The Weeping Song' and were joined on stage by Thurston Moore for one song. Highly enjoyable. Had a few hours to spare mooching about and knocking back some nice Cider before watching Savages. I still insist that they sound way too much like early Banshees, however make no mistake, this was probably one of the most exciting live bands that I have seen in many years. Hard, thrusting, dynamic sonically and a front woman who is mesmerising. Forget Lady Gaga/Madonna or whoever, this woman is the real deal who gets the audience worked up into a frenzy. Great stuff.
Next up was Clark. This was a set of sharp, sinewy, angular, twisty turny, jacking electro and techno that made the previous nights techno effort by Jon Hopkins seem bloated, flabby and pedestrian by comparison. I know which I preferred! And what a way to end the day. I got to see Pere Ubu. Nuff said. A great Saturday indeed.
Sadly I had to cut Sunday short, but not before getting to see the wonderful A Winged Victory For The Sullen. Grand Piano, drones and a Violin/Cello Trio. A great way to soothe a wicked hangover. A great weekend, and not bad for a freebie.
