Most people have a favourite style of music, even if their collection is wholly eclectic, like mine. What is your favourite genre and why do you find yourself listening to it more than any other?

Depends on the day of the week, but in particular it has to be electronica and hip hop. Sometimes the metal comes out too.

Birkenhead's finest, the mighty Half Man Half Biscuit, who are a genre all by themselves. I never tire of listening to their albums (with the possible exception of 'Some Call It Godcore' which isn't much cop).

I believe I turn to alternative rock music mostly, but I do like a bit of classical and rock also.

For me is electronica - I think it's because the individual sounds within the music can be so much more varied and gorgeous to me than normal instruments. The snap and punch too of a synthetic sound, yum yum.

Jazz Fusion and Electronica. I love the fusion for its use of melody and traditional song structure , and Electronica because of the infinite sound creation and complexity.
Now and again I play Jazz, Rock or Reggae , sometimes for months but I always return to 2 faves

Music? What's this music you speak of?

I only play test tones, pink and white noise.

Blues, Jazz etc are main interest but some classical and some popular, as it was called in the day. Used to be a heavy underground type when younger as well but thats pretty rare now. Not much to beat Sinatra, Ellington, Fitzgerald etc on 180 gm vinyl.

I like all types of music at different times...

I like blues, others that I wouldn't know how to describe and a bit of classical.... the only music I 'don't get' is jazz... sorry!

well there is jazz and JAZZ.... some of it I hate as well tbh, but ellington, Armstrong, Ella F, Nina Simone etc of that style is pure poetry.

I mostly play Steely Dan. Very occasionally I'll go off piste a bit and put some Doobie Brothers on. The rest of my collection is just for looking at and to impress the ladies.

I think that for me it has got to be electronic music. I love the work of Brian Eno and the various guises of Simon Posford but also love the music of Ozric Tentacles and the heavily synthesised stuff they do. Of course when I say electronic I also include electric guitar and drum machines. I used to love the electric violin work of Eddie Jobson during his time with Roxy Music. I love almost anything that uses a TB303 and adore analogue synthesisers.

Whilst on the subject of jazz, I absolutely love and adore the music of Brand X.

Martin, personally speaking I would try out 'Moroccan Roll' as it features what I think is the best line up. Just listen to 'Disco Suicide' and not be impressed.

I liked this:

Thompson said: “I worried that I was musically thick and that’s why I didn’t get the apparently-random squeaks and farts. I tried smoking weed but that just made the jazz physically painful.

“After a fourth attempt to get all the way through Bitches Brew I had an epiphany that I didn’t need this in my life. I’m finally at peace with the fact that it’s rancid

It speaks to me because I made 4 attempts to get through a Diana Krall album before deciding the same. But I do like good plinky-plonk if I'm in the mood. What's that live one with everyone talking over it the whole way through? That's good.

If you don't get jazz. Try some Joe Sample.

It's what I call 'easy listening jazz' and it has the great voice of Randy Crawford on it too. Simple stuff, but beautifully done. Just gorgeous.

How about some jazz metal?

This is a fusion band 'Strange Changes' doing a cover of a metal song, pretty amazing stuff.

I love Brand X - they were one of the few bands that paid next to no consideration to commercial success, and they created some strange, beautiful music.
