Hi there

a friend of mine has a fairly large vinyl collection with a very poor and currently broken TT. I mean like it is AMSTRAD or something.

He won't let me do much to improve his system, but as it is his 50th coming up next month :birthday: I thought I could maybe see if I could find him at the very least a working TT.

Only criterion is that it has to be very cheap (£50 max - even better under - including whatever I might need to spend on e.g. a new stylus) as he would be very uncomfortable if I spent more on him. I imagine he will be very embarrassed if I turn up with even a £20 car booter, but he takes me to the Royal Opera House on freebies every now and then so he deserves to be able to play his LPs.

Ideally I would come pick it up in or within reasonable drive of London, as TTs are a bit of a nightmare to post, but M4 corridor, S Wales, and Dorset are all places I will be over the next few weeks, so don't hold back.

Not looking for AUDIOPHILE clearly, just wondering if any of you has anything lying about that might fit the bill, and would be good to go, or close to it?

Thank you in advance...

R

If it functions. It's untested, which often means not working and Duals can be a pain to sort out.

I wouldn't. Plasticky lightweight turntable that uses 'P' mount cartridges only. No No.

I agree, but the remit was for something inexpensive, the price was sufficiently low.

I wasn't planning on it, Jamie, but if you're giving away something great for a crazy price, I can think about firing up the tractor...

I've got an unusual Mitsubishi DP-780 for sale. Fitted with a AT95E and new (genuine) stylus, it's £65.

I could do it for £50 but would need to swap the cartridge and stylus out for something else.

It's a quartz locked direct drive design so easy to use and low maintenance.

I live near Bicester (M40, J9).

Thanks Geoff -
if it was very near where I was going that might be tempting, but its a bit far off my routes...

Perfect opportunity to clear out your loft, people!!

:)

Hi Andy -
Three! That's great - I'll have a look and may well send you a PM later in the week if nothing pops up any closer... Which is the best one in your opinion? I do like the idea of "boxed, near mint" it must be said...
Robert

Hi Robert,
They are all nice turntables for the money, I would say the technics sl-d2 is the best, but the lid is not in the best of condition, and you would have to get a cartridge, as one is not fitted at the moment.

I picked up the SONY PS-LX100 from Andy yesterday.

It is in very very good condition indeed, and despite being an incredibly cheap, incredibly light, incredibly plastic, incredibly unadjustable, incredibly unupgradable piece of mass market Japanese kit, it actually sounds really good!!

Amazingly it has also blitzed its way through the Stereo Test LP, even pretty much holding up on the torture track.

Definitely well worth £40 and a short detour off the A3, I think my friend is going to be very pleased with it.

Thanks Andy!

Yup, thats the same as the one I sold recently. I couldn't believe how a piece of plastic 'junk' could sound as good as it did either. Quite surprising. Hope your mate appreciates it.

Looks okay to me. If there are any voids in the underneath of the plinth try filling them with plastecine or playdough. Should make it better, might make it worse, but it is a quick, cheap tweak and fully reversible.
