View Full Version : New guy from Gillingham in Kent
Hi guys,
Well there's not much to say about me,I'm a retired tube train driver and my main interests in life are my dogs and my family.
I renewed my interest in music after cleaning up some vinyl I found in my loft, bought an automatic turntable cheap and fell in love with music again.
My record collection is swelling and now I'm looking at getting some better equipment, not being very knowledgeable on turntables etc I shall be turning to you guys for help.
Richard
Welcome Richard....dont recall any Tube drivers on here so you may be a first.:) Turntable help will be readily availabe if you ask a question in analogue.. dont forget to quote a price ceiling or your likely to be hit with some fancy and expensive options.
enjoy the forum
Thanks for the warm welcome struth,so no other 'motormen' on the forum eh,right, so if any of you guys want to know anything about driving tube trains I'm your guy.
Seriously though,I've got a lot of questions regarding turntables old and new so I'm going to need your help and suggestions.
Looking forward to using the forum to improve my understanding of the 'techy' side of HI-FI.
just decide on the type of deck you want..functions etc and cost etc...think also re phono stages too as the better the deck a!d cartridge etc so the need fo a better stage than the oft poorish ones in ma!y integrateds have in them...not all though. it can rapidly add up to a lot of money..lol

Hi Grant,
I've got a pretty basic setup at the moment,a nice Denon amp,Technics cd player,Technics tuner, all old but good and off Ebay, couple of book shelf speakers and a Pioneer PL990 auto player that does the job but I would really like to upgrade the deck.
I'm looking at some Ebay turntables mainly interested in a Rega Planar 3 and also there is a nice Pioneer PL-12D and also a PL-112 but it seems a lot of money for an old turntable.
Not sure if I should perhaps look at a new Rega RP1 at £200+ as it carries a guarantee,in a bit of a quandary at the moment, just want something reliable and a bit up market from the PL990.
I'm doing a lot of research but so many different opinions that I'm now so confused I need to lie down in a dark room.

Hello Richard. Welcome to AOS.
So you're making a fresh start in Hi-Fi? There are so many options and routes to take. Good job you've come here.
First things are to decide what type of system you want. Purely vinyl playing or CD or digital via computer, etc., then your budget, maybe for the whole setup or for each stage.
There are forum sections dedicated to every aspect of HiFi. Have a look around and post questions in a suitable area, or post general questions in the 'Blank Canvas' section. You'll get plenty of replies.
Can you tell us what kind of music you like?
Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.
(PS. The PL-12D is preferable to the PL-112 in my opinion, having owned both. The PL-12D is a decent starting point for vinyl playing)
Thanks for the advice Geoff, I have a budget of up to about £350-£400 for a decent deck, nothing too old and maybe even new, with of course a guarantee.
I don't know much about the Pioneer PL-12Ds or the Rega models come to that,I just want something that is reliable and sounds good,I like pop music but I'm also into movie classics from the likes of Hans Zimmer and Ennio Morriconnie etc.
So really I want reliability, something that doesn't cost the earth and finally looks good, any ideas?

Richard.
Have a look here in the Analogue Art section dedicated to vinyl playing: http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?4-Analogue-Art
Or here in Blank Canvas, the general Hi-Fi area: http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?16-Blank-Canvas
Start a thread in which section you find appropriate and ask your questions.
You'll get many varied replies, so draw what you can from them.
By the way, you are unlikely to get a guarantee with a second hand turntable unless you buy from a used equipment specialist. However, turntables tend to be reliable. You could look at what Hi-Fi Hangar in Bordon has to offer. They specialise in good used equipment and are very pleasant and helpful to deal with.
Hi Geoff,
Yes I appreciate that secondhand carries no guarantees I meant if I was to get a new Rega RP1,mind you they look pretty basic to me and I do like the look of old style decks such as the Technics and the Pioneers, trouble is I'm a bit of a technophobic or whatever you call them.
I will take your advice and peruse the different sections of the forum and I appreciate very much the helpful advice from you guys.
