Just received microsoft notification offer advise to reserve windows 10 for free. Anyone else get this? Shows as would be £99.99. Says it's faster, resumes faster, comes with more security features and designed to work with the hardware and software you already use. The start up menu is back and improved.
Just have to click 'Reserve your free upgrade' and then install when you receive notification after 29 July ....
as well to rerserve it. You dont have to take it straight away, so you could wait and see if its good or bad after a few months being used by others...thats what I'm gonna do

I received my 'invitation' months ago and reserved mine for my Windows 8.1 PC. Not worried about the start menu though. I've got one 'cos I'm using Classic Shell software which makes it look and work like Windows 7 (it's very good and free). Hope it works on Windows 10 (or isn't needed).
Still waiting for an offer of Windows 10 for my Windows 7 PC (which I'm on at the moment). It's an OEM copy install that I did, so I'm not sure they'll offer it.

Precisely. That's what I plan. Let them iron out any early bugs first.
It's an OEM copy install that I did, so I'm not sure they'll offer it.
All 5 of my PCs are self builds with an OEM Windows OS. So far only one of them (a Win 7) has the free offer.

Had this regularly pop up on the laptop but thinking off going MacBook so I'm gonna let it lie dormant on the tool bar, just in case I have a change(another) of heart.

You have 12 days in which to accept. Then a period of about a year to opt to install W10. You might as well put your name down for it. You are not obligated to install it.

Just spent the last 6 hours upgrading from windows 7, nearly 3 hours to download and about 1.5 hours to install. It's up and running but seems very sluggish on my machine, a few problems to sort out but at least it has installed ok, more then I can say for 8.1. Will have a good play tomorrow/today.

That's the one that I used.
gonna hold off for a while and see how it is received. I am one of the few who like win 8.1 :sofa:

The PC I am typing from right now is a W7 updated to w10 today. At a glance it is just a better version of W7 for now. And I prefer W7 to W8.1. But whatever you do, please back do an image back up with the MS back up program in W7 or W8.1. You can then at least roll back if things go wrong.

So far W10 seems fine... no drama's. Probably the easiest download/install I've ever done with an OS. So thumbs up for that.
It 'will' have lots of fixes and updates in the coming weeks so hopefully it will stay stable.
The start menu is better too.
Still need to run Maya and my other programs though.

I tried an alternative method on another PC, which is described on the MS site at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
It is the easiest method so far.
I have gone back to Windows 7, too many faults/errors to try and sort out on my machine. Boot time nearly doubled, disk errors, event viewer errors, device manager problems plus a couple of programs not running correctly. Could be time for a nice new machine with windows 10 pre-installed.
Want to install 10 today, so doing the manual download and install.
Downloaded the install tool from Microsoft, ran it and got this extremely helpful error message... :D

Downloading the ISO and writing the image to a stick using the windows USB usb tool.
Less faffing about and prefer to do things manually anyway.
got the pop up last night....not doing it for now if ever. could cause problems with drivers etc

would there likely be any issue with my NAS/Squeezebox on windows 10?
Im assuming that it should still pick up the NAS on the network ok, just if there is any issues with LMS running
i remember moving to win 8 Josie and half my external equ wouldnt work for a while and then had to download drivers etc. So thought id wait and let everything settle first. tbh i have mostly found 8.1 fine apart from updating where i get reported crashes.. but its always dojng that. still works fine though. it just starts like any other on desktop mode.

Yes, I have used Max and Maya for, well since max firs came out as 3DS. And before that, I used POVray.
I'm an environments artist, worked in the games industry since 89 so I've been through all of the iterations of 3D Software. I used Lightwave for a while too, and ZBrush. Softimage and Quantel as well as the normal like PS etc.
Good to know a fellow polygon tweeker.. :) lol - sounds like a Aphex Twin track.

You need a more knowledgeable network administrator. W7 and W8.1 don't have privacy statements to the depth of W10, because it used to be done in secret without your knowledge. But changes in the law in the US now means that MS has to be a lot more open about it just in case they get sued.
When you first install W10 it offers you an Express or personalized mode. Use the personalized mode to change the privacy settings. You can also adjust (most of) those settings after installation of W10.

Could be an AutoPlay issue. Plug your camera or card into the PC and open 'This PC'. The device should be shown and you can open it to send files to appropriate locations.
You should be able to access AutoPlay settings from the search box. Don't change anything if you're not sure what to touch. Do a bit of research if need be.
I have known AutoPlay to simply not work after a Windows O/S installation. If you've made your back-up discs for W10. You could always recover/reinstall (bit of a pain). Not sure if just a repair facility is on there.
Microsoft used to offer an AutoPlay repair patch, but I have a feeling it's not available any more. May be worth checking.
Good info Stan, but scratch a little deeper and unfortunately there's a lot of stuff still going on "under the bonnet" so to speak, particularly with regard to telemetry about usage being sent back to MS...
MOST of it can be hit on the head if you know your way round the host file and *.bat files.
If not, theres an app for that.

i checked with hp and there is no win 10 driver for my printer at moment..so i will stay where i am
Personally, I'm sticking with Windows 7. If it aint broke...
No one I know who's gone the 10 route has much of a good word to say about it.
Unless there's an over riding reason (such as loss of support for W7) then I can't see much benefit, only more problems to sort out going the 10 route. I'll wait for "11" ;)

Critical error message reads -
Start menu and Cortana aren't working ! I've rebooted and tried F8 several times, message still appears :steam:
Anyone else had this message or any ideas.

Hey Stan, You're the best !! I followed the simplest 'fix' in the discussion link by 'Chelseablue' which seemed to work for others as well and thankfully it worked for me. Thanks again Stan :thumbsup:

Yes they did say that was the case re guinea pigs, although not in those words. Pretty sure I will stay with win 8.1 as long as I can. I works fine with me and I dont fancy having to relearn another systenm. I actually like win 8.1 :sofa:

W8.1 runs all my programs and I can reasonably familiar with how to tamper with the security settings. I have W10 on a test laptop. That gives me the chance to try it out and find out what won't work.

you can do it within windows Stan. its an easy tweak. I put a runtrough on this or maybe Geoffs computer thread not long ago. you dont need a third party.

How to boot straight to the desktop in Windows 8.1

Thanks for the info. But that one I got sorted very quick. the right mouse click to get into the menu function for shut down and restart is what drove me mad in W8.1. The classic shell program sorted that one out.
I just take the pointer to right bottom

The question that you should ask yourself is how your life would be enriched if you switched to W10. In my case I cannot find any. All the important programs that I must be able to run are fully compatible with W7 and W8.1. Do I want to run the risk of bringing my business to a grinding halt if I install W10? Nope. so I use it on a machine to play about with. For the more serious stuff I am sticking to W7 on one machine, and W8.1 on another.
My feeling also.. I may not have a business but I dont want my laptop to go wonky

If you are happy with Windows 7 I would stick with it for now, I had major problems trying to upgrade form Windows 7. I then tried a fresh install of Windows 10 with no problems, but I am sticking with 7 for the time being.
