View Full Version : Wanted IMF TLS 50 Tweeter

I've just picked up a pair of IMF TLS 50 (Mk1 I think). The tweeters however seem to be incorrect - currently has slightly oversized Audax units.

Anyone either have a pair of originals or alternatively know what they were. They look the same as other rectangular ones in the range according to google images.

To be clear this is the rectangular normal tweeter and not the round super tweeter.

The cabinets on these look like mine with the single transmission line exit port and main drivers which look undersized for their cut out:

There seem to be different tweeter on google pictures though...

Thanks
Geoff

Thanks - I don't have a picture of the correct ones as mine appear to be none original. I can add one from Google if that helps but I'll have to guess which is correct.

Geoff, I think if you ask on the AK IMF (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=509555) owners thread, someone there will be able to identify the tweeter model for you.

yeah looks wrong.
my 50s had a 1'' soft dome made by audax with a smooth rectangular plate.
mine also sported a soft dome mid and all the drivers were mounted on a separate piece of plywood glued into the top section of baffle.
they had been stored in not ideal garage for many years and had all sorts of nasties living inside.
to bring them back to life I pried off the baffle plate and was able to shake out the crap that had entered by the transmission line port.
was easy to access the xover this way too....dry joint city!!!

Been looking more closely now I'm on the pc and get bigger pics, and they are I think the same tweeters that are on my super compacts.

Yup. Transmission lines and horns make great homes for spiders and the like. A bit of very fine mesh stops that.

Grant - if you've still got yours, would it be possible to pop a tweeter out and see if there is a manufacturer, part number and impedance on it please? Many thanks.

The tls 50's should have Audax 12 x 9 d25 tweeters...like these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-Vintage-Polydax-Audax-HD12x9D25-Tweeters-/121706985638?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c564d38a6

Further investigation of the main drivers..tells me they have a huge magnet...which indicates they are either b200 sp1039..(80watt 8 ohm drivers)..or sp1054 (100watt 8 ohm drivers)

the mid range speakers look wrong..they in far too close proximity to the main drivers..

Lovely sounding tweeter those. Really smooth and sweet. I have a pair of the round flange version tucked away somewhere I believe.

If I recall the Peerless tweeter was used too. DM2 had them as well and some MS models.

The TLS50 had a life in this cabinet form for a good few years and drive units were being developed rapidly at this time. The mid drivers look fine and possibly made by Elac, as the bass and mid drivers on my original IMF Compacts (pre Grant's pair) are. Don't worry about the artexed look, that was part of the doping process and worked just fine.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the tweeters were changed in production from early to mid 70's. Falcon Acoustics are the people to ask first I think, as the people there were around at the time. Good old Wilmslow Audio stock a vast range as well, but Falcon *may* be able to advise you better on these. PLEAEE REPLACE THE PAIR if you're going with new ones!

As of the mid 70's, the grille trimmings were updated, the black fret having an aluminium trim fitted and I think this may have been before the TLS50 II proper happened. Forty years ago now and I can't bloody remember :(

I think these should use the Audax 12x8 rather than the 12x9. Mine currently have non-functional 12x9 fitted which don't fit in the cut out. Also none of the pictures on the web have the 12x9 chamfered corners, they are all purely rectangular like the 12x8.

Anyone got a pair?

peerless?

Yes, that is a Peerless tweeter.
I have identical ones in my Celef speakers.
The Audax has the same size front plate, but I don’t know about its characteristics compared with the
Peerless.

GeoffI'm confused Geoff, is the photo of yours, or taken off the net which you are assuming have the correct type? If the latter can we have photos of yours please? I'd be wary of just assuming that because yours look different they must be wrong, as someone said drive units could have changed over the production run.

peerless?

Looks like it, Peerless DT10HFC

By the way, the mid unit shown is an EMI paper cone, specially coated.

Someone just pointed out to me that this thread is nearly 4yo. I'm not sure Geoff still needs a tweeter!

Yes, long gone. They were lovely speakers but a bit over powering in my living room!
