New member, rekindled interest in audio gear

Hello Everyone

Just a brief intro -- my name is Tim and I live in Pittsburgh, Pa in the USA. I used to really enjoy audio gear 20 years ago, but had to give it up after the birth of my daughter. Now that she's of adult age, and I'm 21 years MORE into the adult age, I've gotten the urge to get some new equipment. I am not up to speed on the latest and greatest gear....and truthfully all of the Home Theater stuff doesn't really appeal to me. I enjoy good old fashioned 2 channel stereo, and have been enjoying browsing for some nice older gear that I see is now pennies on the dollar vs what it was back in the day. So far I have picked up a Pioneer Elite receiver, a pair of Energy speakers and a basic Sony 5 disc CD player.
I've also got a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers , but haven't had a chance to give them a listen just yet. 20-25 years ago I loved the sound of Luxman amplification, and Dahlquist, Snell, D&M and Vandersteen speakers. I also remember listening to a pair of Bang and Olufsen speakers that were out of this world.

Anyway, I may be asking for opinions or a bit of technical assistance here and there. Nice to be a part of the community.

Welcome to the forum Tim.

It's great being able to afford all the stuff that was too expensive when we were younger. The biggest problem is that I just can't resist when the gear I lusted after back then pops up on eBay. The house is becoming a museum. We ran out of rooms to house complete systems ages ago and I've started stacking things on shelves.

I am unconvinced that there has been much progress soundwise though so you can enjoy some of those names, knowing that you are still listening to quality.

Hello Tim. Welcome to AOS.

Glad to see you are not seduced by multi channel audio. Proper stereo is the purist way to go in my view.

Much of the equipment from twenty, thirty or forty or more years ago can still be as good today as it was back then and stand comparison with modern gear well. Vintage based systems are justifiably popular and many members have them.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. The music I listen to is mostly 25-35 years old. I enjoy a lot of smooth jazz, old school R&B, and alternative music. I'm not tied to one genre, I'm all over the map. I'm a two channel audio guy,
not a fan of 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 home theater applications. I am on the lookout for a vintage receiver. I used to have a Luxman R-115 and I loved it. I could kick myself for ever parting with it. Now, I'd like to find another one, but it's proving hard to do. I'm seeing a few Luxman R-113 receivers and R-341 receivers. A bit underpowered vs what I was hoping for , but I'm considering them. Does anyone have any insight on these ? The R-113 is familiar and similar to the R-115, but I've no knowledge of the R-341. Can anyone chime in on that ????
