ADC QLM33 iii

I may have the chance to buy an ADC QLM33 III. I have a few questions. I was wondering where does it rank in the scheme of MM cartridges and the ADC range? Is it worthwhile investing in a Jico or an lpgear stylus? Finally will it work OK with the Sony 6750 arm? Thanks in advance.

It's not an MM. It's IM. Induced magnet, not that it matters. It'll probably be OK in the Sony arm, but I wouldn't bother myself, unless it's dirt cheap. The QLMs do mot measure up to the XLMs, 20 series or 10 series.

Thanks Geoff. It's a guy locally selling a tatty and non functioning ADC 1500 for £35 but it has the cartridge and an LMG1 headshell so I thought I would offer him £20 for the headshell and cartridge.

The TT isn't great even in working order, but the arm is worth using (or selling) if it isn't damaged. It's more or less equivalent to a Linn LV-V or Rega R200.

I have a feeling the arm came from the same Japanese factory the LV-V did and that they are closely related.

If they share the same geometry, which is likely, the ADC arm will be a drop in replacement for the Goldring Lenco GL75/78 arm. Just in case you fancied a little project.

It should be a reasonably capable arm and will work with a decent MC.

Actually, I quite like the cartridge as it is easily upgradable by changing the stylus. I bought a Jico for mine (QLM34) and it tracks very nicely at just under 2 grammes and sounds very clean if a very little bass light.

I use it in a Sansui DD TT for transferring records to the Mac. Quite adequate.

Thanks Gordon. Much appreciated. I' be not heard back from the seller but I think if I get the deck, I will buy a Jico or the elliptical lpgear stylus. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the replies. I have the deck now and shall try and get it working. The good news is that the LMG1 headshell is mint and the vendor says the stylus is new and unused. The stylus is a real ADC by the way. The deck itself is very dusty but otherwise OK cosmetically. The mat has faded and the lid has a crack near one hinge and is very cloudy. Also the hinges can no longer prevent the lid from closing. All in all a mixed bag but for £30 I'm not complaining and it'll be fun tinkering with it.

Bloody hell that takes me back! I think I bought one from Comet in 1979ish.
It packed in within weeks and I got my money back and bought a Dual 505.

Thanks for the info on the arm. I might well just keep it. It might come in handy one day.. For £30 I did alright as the LMG1 headshells usually go for around that.
