View Full Version : Why does kit always sound its best just when you sell it?

I just waved goodbye to my IMFs and am now thinking how great they sounded during that final audition with the prospective purchaser.

I had a very similar experience when selling my Croft Twinstar and again with my Proacs.

Is it a universal truth that kit always peaks on its way out the door or is it just me?

It's just you!

Never mind. When your 'wardrobes' arrive it'll cheer you up.

I've experienced this a few times. It could also mean a bit of regret!

Yes. There's definitely a touch of regret when kit that I've been pleased with is sold. I would love to be one of those lucky people with enough money and space to hold on to the good stuff and run a few systems concurrently. That way you have no seller's remorse.

Don't worry Paul. Get the Tannoys set up right and you'll be delighted.

I'm not familiar with your amp and it may be just fine driving them, but you're not that far from a few members who have amps that are sympathetic to Tannoys. Perhaps you could get a listen to something interesting. A good match makes a huge difference.

Dunno if you're near Ali, but his Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro is a brilliant pairing with Tannoys. It's the same as I use. Super bit of kit.

Thanks Geoff. I've no long term remorse about anything that I've sold but it would be so much better to be able to keep it all. I was just thinking how much I loved my JR149s and super woofer but space considerations in my new place condemned them to an early exit. Such is life. I did prefer the IMFs but it would have been great to have been able to enjoy both sets for longer.

The Kenwood 500 is a lovely amp and I doubt I will ever part with it. Even if it gets replaced I will find space under the bed for it. It's a true dual mono with a conservative 100 watts per channel so I'm sure it will control the big DCs fine and it has sounded good with a fair number of speakers that I have tried with it. No reason to think that it won't make the Tannoys sing. That said, I will have to try out a decent valve amp with them one day.

We definitely differ there. I've used JR149s (without sub) and was not really impressed. They just sounded like a slightly less refined LS3/5a (which I'm not keen on either) to me.

As I say. I've not heard the Kenwood 500. Some Japanese amps can sound a bit ruthless with Tannoys, although the Denon PMA-350SE actually works rather well (and is bargain cheap).

It's the kits way of getting its own back for you selling it, that's all.

I had a pair of JR 149s and really liked them but the Harbeth P3 ERS's were in a completely different league IMO.

Would love to 'hear' what all the fuss is about with Tannoys though.

I don't know that there's a "fuss" about Tannoys Tony. It's just that there seem to be quite a few AOS members who like the better ones. Me included. Perhaps there's an AOS member near you with some who could let you have a listen. You can't just bung a pair on a system and expect miracles. The whole thing has to 'gel'. Get it right and it can be amazing.

How are you finding yours now Paul? Those drivers can sound really fine.

I'm really very taken with them. It's the seemingly effortless nature of their presentation combined with a tremendous sense of scale and authority that has really captured my heart. My system has never sounded better. :)

I reckon some six inch stands will improve things further. They do with mine. The already superb imaging comes better into focus.

Pretty much what mine are on now; 4/5 inches at a guess. made a big difference

hermit
08-07-2015, 21:51
Thanks for the tip. I have them on casters right now which puts them at the perfect height for my couch which is pretty low. The stands will have to wait until the lounge suite is changed. As things are, stands would raise them too much which is a shame. You're right about the imaging though. It's really very impressive.

Are you getting the typical depth of image and soundstage? It's very noticeable with mine. You can hear right into the structure of the image and presentation of ambience in an uncanny way. Yours are closely related to my 3128 Cheviot units.

hermit
08-07-2015, 22:23
I found that the IMF's soundstage particularly deep and convincing but the imaging was less precise than the Proacs that preceded them. The Berkeleys seem to offer the best of both - beautiful precise imaging within a deep and expansive soundstage albeit not as deep as the IMFs.

The drivers in mine are 3828s. Out of curiosity, have you done anything with your crossovers or are they stock? I notice that there are a few crossover mods out there for the k series drivers.

walpurgis
08-07-2015, 22:41
Mine are near standard. They sounded so good, I left them pretty much as is. Yours are the same age and series and I'd say unless something sounds amiss, don't tinker.

You may have seen the (somewhat extended) thread I did on my renovation: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?19555-My-new-(vintage)-Tannoy-Cheviots!&highlight=%28vintage%29

It could be of interest.

This series of Tannoys had reasonably well sorted cabinets. Much less resonant than earlier models, but not beyond a tweak or two I suppose. If the bass is well controlled on yours, don't get tempted into playing with the ports (as some do), although Declon port bungs do no harm. Crossovers will likely need new caps eventually. but if there are no audible probs so far, they're probably OK.

Interesting thread. You did a fantastic job on your Cheviots :)

I normally get the crossovers done on the vintage speakers that pass through but I'm thinking there's no rush with the Berkeleys as they sound really good as they are. I will just enjoy them for the time being but one day I will get the crossovers refreshed just to be sure that they're up to spec.

It is also true that if you have a gap between when you parted with an item and the replacement arrives, you never felt such a burning need to play your music! No other form of recreation will do, to keep you content.

I have often thought about opening a "sellers remorse" shop, where the seller will bring his gear there for a fee, and I will set it up on a display shelf along with all the other goodies that audio folks bring in. It will be all cleaned up and looking great for all to peruse for a said amount of time. Of course the owner may come back and look at it lovingly on the shelf as often as they like, and after the term is up, if remorse isn't as great as one thought, it could then be sold for real, or as it may sometimes work, the owner would want it back.

I often thought this type of thing could work for used vehicles as well, as most of the time when I have either traded or sold a vehicle on, I usually have a bit of remorse, especailly when I see it sitting there for resale on the lot. Crazy stuff.

I like that- "seller's remorse" shop. I have come soooo close, on several occasions, to selling almost all my kit items individually, only to stop, consider and then stop. My wife hates it 'cos she thinks I'm getting rid, but then change my plans, usually at the 11th hour...;)

I sold the Harbeths Grant, have a pair of cheap Dalis Ikon (I think) small bokshelf speakers at the minute and they're not bad for my listening habits (internet radio and radio 4 fm).

I forgot Tony..sorry. Must have been hard to let them go, but as you say if your not using them too much to their potential then you might as well not have em. Dali's get a good name tho'....been through a few myself and having gone down to just 1 system I now have loads of speakers doing nowt lol

if need a set on loan anytime then just say, and if they are hear you can use them

Well I made my way down to Paul's place today to have a listen to his Tannoy's and, well I get it now, just fantastic at making music, they completely pull you into the music and then you totally forget them.

I loved them, remarked to Paul how much they reminded of me of the sound that I was used to when i was listening to music in pubs and clubs when I was younger, quite amazing really that sound still being there in my memory after about 35 years.

The speakers are really analogue sounding and brilliant with vinyl but just as good with digital too and with streaming music files, great stereo imaging too absolutely pin sharp and precise, bass was great without being overwhelming and very tuneful.

I really think that Paul has won a watch with these speakers and they also look in very good condition with nice cabs that go really well with the rest of Paul's kit which really looks in great condition and sounds wonderful with the Tannoys.

I would defintely buy a pair of those Tannoys, no question about that!

Thanks again Paul I really enjoyed the chat and the choons mate:cool:

Cheers

Tony

PS, St Germain's record is on discogs and very reasonable it is too.

Thanks for the feedback Tony. It's always comforting to get another opinion on a new toy. I'm still getting used to the Berkeleys but so far so good. They seem to gel well with the rest of my system.

Thanks for the link. Hopefully I'll be able to play it for you on vinyl the next time that you pop down.
