This week, apart from the ridiculous temperatures has seen regular storms at night. Thunder and lightning for hours. Not a lot of rain though.

Although we have spike protection, I don't really trust it to protect the hi-fi and computers so I switch them off. This week, we are expecting storms every night. I hate switching the Quads on and off too much so for a while, I have bought the Sony APM-20ESs down from one of the bedroom systems.

They are very enjoyable. Tonally spot on with surprisingly good bass. However, in comparison to the Quads, they are horribly muddy. That see through clarity and speaker disappearing act just doesn't happen. I am listening to the Leak Stereo 20 which suits the Quads but might have a go with some SS later to see if that suits them better.

Considering how everything from the Far Easy was mocked at the time though, it's clear a bit of nepotism was in the air.

Hmm....still the same with the Quad 34/306. I'll swap to a Sony with a bit more oomph in a bit.

From all of the high end gear the ones that suited best my APM-22ES were a simple Pioneer SX-440 and a HK 330A... superb sound coming out of these 2 bundles with incredible bass, very controlled but so powerfull that it could hurt your chest in the lower notes. One of the best I ever heard and almost on par with my 33's with have another weight into them.

Not sure about the woofer but the tweeter is different being a apm unit aswell in the 22's, and this one is very detailed playing way down through the mid rage without being agressive.

Strangely, the 33/303 is much better. More attack and greater weight to the drums. I could live with this - almost........but not for long. I'll be glad when this week is over. Lets hope the Meteo is right about the storms stopping next week.

For now I think I might stick to the Sony TA-F300 and KEF101s in the snug.

You need to do more than switch them off, mainsleads need pulled out of the wall socket too as a direct hit can blow consumer units off walls and send destroying voltages up leads into switched off equipment.

When I said switch them off I meant remove the plugs from the sockets... obviously:D

The Sonys just leapt into life. 100 proper watts of Pioneer A757 up'em and they sing a bit. Still - obviously - not in the Quad's territory but an enjoyable listen none the less.

I don't know what's inside these Sonys but both the Quad 306 and 303 run very hot when driving the speakers. Normally the 303 barely gets warm although the weather is rather warm at the moment. The Pioneer and the Leak hardly break sweat though!! Any ideas?

It says 6 ohms Alan. I'm surprised the Quads aren't happier with that:scratch:

He's right. Only live is switched and a spike can come up neutral or earth. I'm two computers down on this phenomenon...now I unplug and I unplug eveything from the router too. Never had audio equipment damaged though I do unplug that now as well.

Yup, we do that but old habits die hard and I said switch off automatically. The Quads don't have switches of course but everything else does so we pull the plugs.

I agree with Alan.
The Sony speakers require more current to drive them.
The Sony speakers might also have quite a reactive load, whereas your other speakers have a relatively benign one.
