Spec for B&W DM2 speaker drivers?

Does anyone know the full specification of the 8" bass drivers used in the B&W DM2?

I would also be interested in the specs for the Celestion HF1300 mid-range / tweeters. I gather from the Troels Gravesen site that they are designed to cover the range from 3kHz to 13kHz and I believe that they are fully enclosed at the back so I presume they do not require a cabinet as such?

I don't have the specification for the DM2 bass unit. As you say, the HF1300 does not require a separate enclosure. I believe that in the DM2 it is rolled off slightly by a series inductor. I have the circuit diagrams for the DM2 and DM2a if they are of any use.

The HF1300 is a tweeter, not a midrange unit, crossover point is usually around 3 KHz, so no great volume is needed behind the dome.

The Coles 4001G is a supertweeter.

DM2 and DM2a are quite nice systems.

The DW 200/2 is a bit coloured in the mid compared to a couple of other Bextrene units. The DM4 Bextrene unit is slightly better in that respect. B200, I would say is also coloured in the mid.

Best Bextrene 8" units in my view are the Spendors and the Dalesfords.

As the HF1300 is a tweeter, do you feel that this speaker is somewhat lacking in the mid-range? Having heard a pair, the bass seems surprisingly good and I would say that overall the speaker sounds pretty fair.

How important (for ageing ears) is a supertweeter and if important, do you have any idea why the 4001 rather than the HF2000?

It's all a matter of taste, I quite like the DM2 and DM2a, they do have a slightly recessed mid compared with the DM4. I have all of these speakers.

I also have Spendor BC1 and Rogers LS3/6, both have a slightly better mid than the DM2/DM2a, but they have better bass.

The LS3/6 uses the Celestion HF2000 as a supertweeter instead of the Coles 4001G, not much difference, except the Celestion is slightly more robust in this situation.

Even with aging hearing (as I have), being over 60 years old, I can tell the difference with and without the supertweeter. As mentioned, in the DM2/DM2a the HF1300 is rolled off at the top end. If one was going to ditch the Coles, the series inductor should be removed from the 1300 to allow it to go as high as possible.

The BC1 and LS3/6 crossovers don't roll off the 1300 at the top end.

That's probably why I prefer the balance over the DM4. The DM2 variants sound smoother to me.

About 10 years ago in a high end system I heard some DM2a's in AB comparison with much larger PMC speakers. The DM2a's stood up very well.

Hi old thread I know but I'm thinking of getting spare HF1300s for my DM2s and there are some on ebay but should I be looking for a certain type/impedance /mounting etc?

16 Ohm ones with the round flange, forget the number T????, same as in the BC1, BC2, BC3, B&W DM4, DM1.

DM3 has a 16 Ohm HF1400, bigger magnet that the 1300.

The low impedance ones (Ditton 15 etc) with the smaller magnet are not suitable.
