I've recently become aware of trumpeter Matthew Halsall.

This is just the sort of Jazz I prefer listening to, mellow modal compositions. My favourite albums so far are Fletcher Moss Park and Sending My Love but all of those that I've got so far are excellent (I only need to get Colour Yes). Fletcher Moss Park and When The World Was One are also available on vinyl, although I found the FMP to be a little bit noisier than WTWWO. I have particularly enjoyed the flute playing of Lisa Mallet on these.

Matthew is also involved with Gondwana Records label which has released albums by piano trios GoGo Penguin, Mammal Hands and saxophonist Nat Birchall. In my opinion all of the albums have their highlights but fail to maintain the standard across the full release like Matthew's recordings do. There is still a lot of top notch music on all of them though.

If you like modal jazz I recommend you give all of these artists a listen.
