Would it be damaging to my records if I substituted 99% ethyl alcohol for isopropyl alcohol in my record cleaning solution? Also, would always like to see some really effective recipes.

Cheers,

Michael

I tried it once years ago and it damaged some records (made them scratchy/noisy) but seemed OK on others. I'd advise to NOT use it!

I'd recommend not messing around making your own and just buy some ready made "the right one" fluid, it's the best I've tried so far.

Grant' fabric softeners work by DEPOSITING a mix of lubricants onto the e fabric/vinyl. Often these are fatty acids that will in turn hold dust.

Thank's Chris, cai I quote you on that:)

...and it goes a long way.

5ltr tub did my 300 or so collection and about a quarter of it still left for Charity shop specials and ongoing fuzzy purchases.(damn you Discogs...)

Paul, I'd like to give the right one fluid a trial. Where can I get this?

Yes feel free, if you want a formal quote happy to write something but it may not be particularly eloquent :) contact me via the Wam as I don't visit here very often now. Would have responded earlier but my posting privileges were removed when I challenged someone over what I felt was unfair comments in a thread.

Are you selling it again as I'm running low?

For the record(pun intended) my records are perfectly clean and silent in play.

What's the benefit of the fabric softener?

Sorry to piss on your brilliant idea but ethyl alcohol is much more aggressive at dissolving things than is isopropyl alcohol. Ethyl alcohol has a habit of dissolving oils and greases quite well though.
