Hi all,
A bit of a long shot but does anybody remember the brand of whisky from the 70s that came in a brown bottle with a white diamond shaped label, it's been cropping up in episodes of The sweeney i've been watching, and an episode of The professionals I've just watched too.
I've googled all sorts of combinations of words to try to find it but no luck, finding out has become one of those fun itches that i need to scratch now :-)
Cheers
Rich.
My have been a tv brand.. they often did that
Antiquary 21 yr old had a white diamond label, although think they have changed the label now.. as did Hendricks gin, it was a really dark brown bottle with a sharp hite label. they may have been using that with tea in it lol. There was a blend that had a black diamond but I cant remember its name.

Hi Grant,
It does look a lot like the Hendricks gin bottle/label, but the bottles were the standard tall round and flat half shape.
Tv brand would make sense but be very unfair of them :-)
At least your watching proper telly,,,

Just had a week in bed with a respiratory infection, I am pretty sure I watched every episode of The sweeney that's on youtube.
I quite enjoyed it, apart from being ill.

Sure is, I have a bottle of Smirnoff Black Label waiting for me. I suspect tomorrow morning is going to hurt

REGAN "Somebody put something in my drink last night"
CARTER "What?"
REGAN "Alcohol..."
Superb... Love The Sweeney - I've seen that bottle too, no idea what it was... doubt it was anything special though.

Just had a google, don't think it's that, grateful for the suggestion though.

I'm thinking that if it is a real brand it's going to be a pretty low end of the scale blend.
Not if Cowley was drinking it as he only drinks single malts

Absolutely! This was a half bottle given to Bodie by Doyle on a stakeout.

Here is the best I can get from both shows, looks the same to me but it's not much help.

looks more like a rear label than a front one tbh. could be sherry or port
Bit o/t I know but my uncle Rod served with Merseyside CID from the late 'Sixties to the mid 'Eighties. He was exactly like the character Gene Hunt from 'Life on Mars'. If I didn't know better I'd swear they based the character on him. He once told me that in his opinion the Police And Criminal Evidence Act ruined policing in the UK because it meant they could no longer torture a confession out of suspects...
Anyway one of his ex-colleages told me this story. It was the custom to celebrate cracking a big case or securing a conviction to 'get a bottle in' i.e Scotch Whisky and have a bit of a jolly in the office. Over the years this had got a bit out of hand and a new Chief Constable had laid it down from on high that no more bottles could be got in unless it was a very special occasion and the DCI okayed it.
One afternoon it was a bit slow and they were sat about bored. The DCI enters the room and my uncle says 'Hey can we get a bottle in?'
The DCI asks 'what's the special occasion?' To which my uncle replies: 'Cindy the cleaner just got a new head for her mop.'
They got their bottle.

It does actually look a lot like a rear label now you mention it, can't imagine this lot as sherry or port men though, a bit too refined.
Suspect it's a 'fictitious' brand: looks like a whisky bottle/label but one that does not actually exist. Even though these TV series were shown on commercial TV, product placement was still discouraged. They couldn't do anything about the cars they were seen driving, but everything else was 'low key'.
Anyway the actual content of the bottle would have been cold tea! :(

it looks like a Sherry bottle to me.
SHOCK! HORROR!
Although, OBAN had a lable like that...
Tbh they dont make whisky bottles brown .... green sometimes and clear usually. Brown is usually for wine based drinks

I will happily admit to enjoying a bottle of sherry at Christmas, and I always have a botttle of port in at home, but I'm not sure I'm ready to hear that these men are sherry drinkers!!!
Looks more like a beer bottle than anything. I'd guess it is meant to be Scotch but as Barry says it's probably just a prop.
I had a search on tinterweb and discovered a 'Professionals' forum...but it was closed.

I found a useful looking forum called TVlounge but that was closed too.
This pic makes me think it probably is a prop brand.

yep - you can recognise it by the very dark colour / shape of bottle and the diamond shaped label on rear of bottle ...

And it even has a diamond label on the back.

Does anyone remember 'Dimple' whisky...? It was in that three sided dimpled bottle...? I used to have an auntie who ran an off licence (remember them) and I used to be enthralled by that bloody bottle.
yes I do...Haig made it..in fact its still made but as a real quality whisky now..a 15 year old blended. it was always good and they are still using a similar bottle
still going from the look of it:

Proper off-licences used to have a particular smell about them - I think it was down to the wine in the casks. You don't get that anymore. there used to be a proper one near me but it closed about 10 years ago.
We had a good one too. i worked there on and off and in the function suites at night. it had a dellicatessen attached. great place but supermarkets destroyed all that.
In retrospect the supermarkets should never have been allowed. It was much better when we had all the little independant shops. I suspect anyone younger than about forty won't even remember those days.

damn right... I hate buying booze in supermarkets. 80% of supermarket wine for example is sweetened crap muck. Proper dedicated shops is where it's at, or was at.
Fortunately for me supermarket Guinness isn't any different ;)
