the 3cm silk dome tweeter on my Yamaha NS-C300 centre speaker has packed up, I have swapped it over with a spare from another speaker, but I wondered if anybody knows of anyone still working with silk dome tweeters, and could try and fix it for me ?

also, the dome on pretty much all my Yamaha's go pimply, like little craters on the moon, over the years I have ignored it because to my ears it does not impact on the sq, but visually it would be nice to have them look like new again

but it seems silk dome tweeters are out of vogue these days, a lot of manufacturers have gone to soft metals and other exotic materials, so I hope there is still somebody in the UK who can replace the dome so they look perfect again, this I would prefer rather than replace with new tweeters which may not be up to spec.

any help much on this would be much appreciated !

Why not have a chat with Wembley Loudpeakers: http://www.wembleyloudspeaker.com/

They take on all sorts of speaker repairs.

Have you tried contacting Yamaha?

Hi Chris, I spoke to them about 2 years ago, my speakers were manufactured in 2000, and they told me that no repairs or spares are possible with my speakers, I think these very large companies probably only want to store parts for about 5 years, and then it is deemed they have done their bit.

Ideally it would be nice to contact someone who works on driver repairs etc from home, and does not have the overheads of a large commercial organisation, so fingers crossed someone can think of someone like that to help me

Thanks Mr Tact for the tip about Wembley Loudspeakers, I will call them Monday, so that will be an interesting guideline price wise for these type of things :-)

Just a thought. Many OEM speaker parts are supplied from China and I've seen loads of replacement dome diaphragms offered amongst other parts. Could be worth a trawl through the net. Sites like AliBaba may list a supplier. You might have to buy a batch, but things tend to be surprisingly cheap from there (any surplus is likely to sell well on eBay, speaker bits are always in demand).

umm, I spent the last hour doing that, but not any joy

seems my 1" tweeters are a little bit out of the mainstream

Specs for the Yamaha NS-300 Tweeter Part No. JA-05U2 Model: XW232AO 1 inch silk soft dome tweeter
Nominal Impednace 6 ohms
Crossover Frequency 3 kHz FR 35 kHz
Nominal Input Power 140W Max 400W
Sensitivity 91 dB/2.83 V/m

some new parts are close, but 8 ohm and not >90dB sens, I also have four screws that are 2" apart (in an equal sided square) , and the closest item I found had three screws - sigh !

not easy but I will continue looking :-)

it might be better I guess for me to find out which speaker models Yamaha also used this tweeter in, and buy some of these speakers, but take out the tweeter, ah well off to Gumtree and ebay for a looksie

Although authenticity is nice, there may be a good alternative tweeter that can be substituted. I'd imagine Paul at RFC might be able to help. I'm pretty sure he has evaluated an enormous number of currently available drive units.

thanks for all the help guys, I managed to buy another pair of NS-200 speakers where the cabinets were in very poor condition, and I have salvaged the drivers, so I will snag a few more over the years just to be on the safe side, I do prefer silk dome tweeters to anything else I have heard

will just have to live with the moon like craters on the silk domes, from the research I have done it seems a very common problem, and after trying lots of methods - from the vacuum cleaner to gaffer take etc, nothing seems to be a permanent fix !
