Hi guys - just got my TT1000 back from Vantage Audio - Richard came to set it up with an Origin Live Enterprise and Lyra Titan i (click on this for a 'work in progress' pic: http://twitter.com/David_J_Price). Very nice sound indeed - not bad for a Micro Seiki inset into a bit of glass! David.

Hi David,

Nice one, matey. How does it compare to your modded Techie? Completely better or just excellent in a different way? :)

Marco.

Hi Marco - I'll wait till I'm able to get that SME V into the Marantz (it's been in the SL1200), then I can compare like with like. Still, I'd say it sounds fractionally better than the Sony '8000 as is...

Richard Peachey dropped a bombshell; he makes a PSU for the Marantz, so I think I'm going to try one. Ken Ishiwata told me there are two weaknesses of the TT1000 - PSU and mat. Have replaced the latter with the new thin OL mat, which works really, really well and only costs about £20, so it's the PSU next, I guess.

Heard Dave Cawley's SP10 at his place last week, and very nice it was too. Beautifully fettled and set up, as you'd expect from Dave. I'll Twitter some pics of his system soon.

All good fun - keeps me off the streets, I suppose...

Hi Guys

Thanks for the nice comments David. My SP-10 has stayed exactly as it is for about a year now, no point in changing anything, apart from the feet maybe and put the new isolation platform you saw in the workshop under it?

Whilst waiting very patently for the SL-1200 bearings to arrive, I have a Garrad 301 in grey (grease bearing) on test from Mathew at Audio Grail.

But next up is the Micro Seiki DDQ 1000, my one is a 100V Japan version and I was going to modify the PSU to give me 110/120/220/240 capability, but a new PSU altogether seems like a spiffing idea! Now just what is the TT 1000 based on.....................................

Dave

I looked at the DDX-1000 service manual some time ago and I vaguely remember that the transformer primary can be connected differently in order to give you 240V. Does the DDQ-1000 use the same power supply as far as you know?

Now just what is the TT 1000 based on.
Looks like the R1500 with the CF-1 arm.

Hi Stan

Unfortunately mine is a Japanese domestic version, not an export, it has no taps or other windings. But hey, this is the excuse to do a separate and better PSU!

I Can't find any reference to the Micro Seiki R1500 (am I loosing my touch?). The Marantz is quartz locked so it must be a Micro Seiki with a Q in it? or does it? The mystery deepens?

Dave

Hi Dave - would you like to borrow my TT1000 PSU. The TT1000 is a Micro, so it would probably work. If not, it might be useful to have a look all the same? David

I'll put more pics up of my deck soon, but Wu thinks I should put the cat pics up first!

. I meant to type RX-1500.
However, the RX-1500 was belt drive, whilst the Marantz is direct drive.

The TT1000 is a Micro DDX-1500 in drag, to the best of my knowledge!

By the way, *who* is Ken Ishiwata? Is he really the design "God" for Marantz (if so, he hasn't arf done some cr@p amongst the good stuff), or is he, as I was once told, an enigmatic figurehead *brand-name* for Marantz's whole design team. I didn't think design engineers in audio were paid that much to swan around like some enigma...:)

Ken is real and a nice chap, if a little short! Here is Ken and I having a chat about the lack of balanced inputs in one of his legendary designs, you can see he looks embarrassed??

is he embarassed because he doesn't know the answers?

Apologies to Ken, I'm a suspicious man these days - he just seems to be wheeled out whenever there's something "new" to be promoted.............. (Neru jackets belong on Ed Straker in UFO LOL! and pony tails do NOT belong on a balding man IMO either so says the balding man)

Hi DP! Looks nice. Have you had your Marantz deck from new? What do you think of the OL arm? Is the finish of the arm better than some of their other models (should be at the cost of it!!!). Thanks.

Hi Ritch,

No - I bought the deck from the ex-MD of Marantz UK.

The OL is much better finished than of yore, but still not up to SME V standards. Instructions and packaging so-so, too. Happily I can't say the same about the sound, which is superlative. One of the best pivoted arms I've ever heard; better than a SME V to my ears.

I've got a Lyra Titan in there now, another gobsmacker of a cartridge.

Full report in HFW next month!

Yes please, would like to borrow your PSU ? Might be an opportunity to pass over the 12" Gyro? And thanks for the http://twitpic.com/hffi6 plug!

David,
The TT 1000 is not universally lauded as the best sounding of the TOTL vintage Direct Drives(neither is my Yamaha GT 2000),that however shouldn't prevent it from sounding decent however.

I have enjoyed reading your praise of the unsung gems of the Japanese Golden Age.I would even partly credit your writings in Hi-Fi World, with my interest in those selfsame unsung gems.Thank You.

Myself, having been a regular of HFW since 1992(or so,maybe earlier?),I've enjoyed the stance that the mag has taken over the years(credit here to Noel?).I look forward to your review of the TT1000.

PS If you want to hear a real 'dark-horse' amongst the Japanese invisibilia, look no further that the Kenwood L-06Ms.Prior to my getting them I had been using a Yamaha B-2, Denon POA 4400s and a Kenwood L-1000M.The L-06Ms blow all the others away.

Isnt the Pioneer 'Exclusive P3a' one of the best ever DD Decks?

Isnt the Pioneer 'Exclusive P3a' one of the best ever DD Decks?

Those who have heard some of the top contenders for that honour, say that it is amongst the best, even if they wouldn't go so far as to call it 'The Best'.

To which Vintage Japanese Direct drive do they bestow that assessment?Virginia, the envelope please......

Answer?Google is your friend here....Seek and ye shall find.

Theo,
Do you imagine that every member of this forum is here all day, every day, waiting for someone to ask them a question about what they wrote over a year ago?
Give the guy a chance!

Your question wouldn't be related to your apparent gripe against the company that was mentioned in the first post would it?
