I did a review a while back of current Atoll kit, and the 'house sound' remains pretty much the same, imo.

The t'other guy in the swap deal has got a nice, fully functional Atoll amp, while I seem to have a 3-box amp that doesn't work properly. :doh: ... and the t'other guy has gone strangely silent .... :(

I just want to undo the swap deal. Someone else might just have said "ooh, yummy, faulty kit" and whipped their screwdriver and multimeter out and sorted it, but I'm not that kind of hifi nut. We're dealing with lethal voltages here and I simply am not qualified to go near it. :)

Yep, Myst G-Ohm power amp.

I think it's a PSU problem - only one channel powers up and there's buzzing and whistling .... before I asked to undo the swap deal (still waiting for a reply on that) the t'other guy suggested it was an earth problem he'd had before with it.
There's nothing obviously loose, I did have a peek inside the PS box - other than that I am out of my depth.

Sadly, other guy has gone back on his word.

He had previously admitted a known fault with the amp when I told him it was faulty --- "hi jerry sorry to hear that,the only thing i can think of isthe earth wire on circuit board,the cable is to stiff,i connect the right mono to left input,and vice versa,i had to re solder the earth before,i played them,sunday through the night,and monday,hope this helps"

Having asked him to undo the swap he intitially replied "hi jerry that wont be a problem,you could get the atoll picked up when mysts are dropped off,i will pay half the postage,"

I got an email this evening ... "hi dont send mono,s back they were working fine when i sent them,yours Charlie!"

I said I would send it back anyway, to which he has now replied "they wont be accepted"


He is KONDO on the forums - deal with him with extreme caution, he does not keep his word and refuses to honour the spirit of a swap deal.

As a boxswapper who has done loads of deals with loads of folks over the years, this KONDO guy is the 1st 'bad apple' I've come across. Most forum folk are as decent and genuine as you could hope for.
Luckily, it's not 'big money'. Still not good, though.

The amp in question is a Myst G-Ohm - a PSU box and two smaller mono power amps.
It's all boxed up and ready to go - anyone qualified care to take a look at it for me? It is likely just a simple wiring fault, but I'm not safe playing around with these things. :)

Really pleased for you Jerry ---- we have dealt a couple of times and it has always been seamless --- sorry to hear of problems especially as i know the Atoll was just as you described ---- like you I am a bit of a box swapper and have encountered one bad apple - unfortunately the amp I received was beyond repair and the guy emigrated (!) which seemed a bit extreme to just get out of a deal ha ha ---- but as you have pointed out there's a lot more decent folk around and with luck you'll end up with a better piece of kit ---- these other guys may feel they have had one over on us but I wouldn't swap places with them for any amount of money - integrity cant be bought ---- enjoy the new gear anyway and thanks to the Forum and thank you to Alan in particular on everyone's behalf -- chris

Like you say, this kinda shit happens once in a blue moon, but once is still too often!

I've found info on the amp Jerry, it looks very well made with a huge psu :eek:

The circuit appears to be the Hitachi FET Amplifier http://www.angelfire.com/sd/paulkemble/sound7g.html

Should be easy to fix, could even just be the contacts on the mute relay :scratch:

Anyway will keep you/everyone updated with progress.

itcsure is solid and has a massive transformer ...not seen the rest of it though but you dont go to the trouble of making a psu like that if your going to skimp elsewhere.. so it should sound good when fettled.

Well, at the moment my totally uneducated guess is that the repair needed to get the amps going is trivial, possibly no more than a loose wire, based on what Charlie has communicated.
But I have suggested to Alan Firebottle that he might look at a bit of upgrade-fettling to get even more sonic performance out of it, and the expense of that if it happens should come out of my own wallet. :)

Having pondered the situation yesterday I have become increasingly uncomfortable with me getting both amps, Charlie. That goes way beyond what is reasonable, in my opinion.

As per the email I sent you, let's just leave things as they are now. I'll keep the Myst and I am sure Alan can sort out any wiring issues for me. You keep the Atoll.
