Good stuff Bev...my car gets the mot next month.... just got in back after getting work done and the guy reckons it'll pass ok now....he should know, he does the mot's :eyebrows:

I've never had a bike fail, but I generally do my own maintenance. I built a classic racer once, engine rebuild, chassis welding and all, and the tester who knew me well didn't even take it off the trailer! Which was a bit annoying as I WANTED it checking over. :(
Cars, I've had plenty of failures there.

I rebuilt an ex-army Armstrong MT500 from the ground up a few years ago. Pig of a bike. Useless front brake and left side kick start on a tall big single. I thought MZs were awkward enough to start until I got that. It passed its MOT though. I had it on the road for about two weeks and chopped it for a Suzuki GSX-600F. Miles nicer, cost the same.

I've not had a bike fail either... The only thing I've done to the Rebel was an oil change some months ago... And with cars I've been pretty lucky as well... my 25 year old Merc still went through with no advisories last MOT :)

Had some good fun on Jap bikes.

My little Honda CB-1 400 was an absolute scream to ride 'cos it was tiny and went like the clappers, great around corners too.

Years ago, I built myself a tuned Kwacker H-1 500. The mad two stroke triple. It was totally crazy, but huge fun.

I also had the rare Yamaha SZR-660. Probably the fastest single cylinder bike sold in the UK, with great handling. That was certainly different, not slow either.

Had bigger ones too, but somehow I find the small/medium stuff more entertaining.

We bought an original Goldwing 1000, put an 1100 fairing on it and rode to Italy. It burnt out a coil and we had to get one sent from England! There were none in Italy. So next year we went on a Moto Guzzi SP1000, which DIDN'T break down. But we made friends with the couple who ran the Youth Hostel at Menaggio on Lake Como when the Goldwing broke down there, and have been back every year since. They came and stayed with us one year. And when we stayed in Venice we put them in touch with the lady who has a B&B there, so now we are all friends!

It's pretty rare for Honda's to break down, I've had 3 and know others that have had loads of them and they have always been very reliable.. I loved my Moto Guzzi but if it ever needed any parts it was about a months wait from Italy if you were lucky... fortunately I never needed parts for mine for the time I owned it.. However the Guzzi had such a fantastic character that you won't get from a Honda.. you ride Guzzi's like you stole them and they love it.. :lol:

Ther are plenty of suppliers in the UK for old Guzzi parts, and our friends live across the lake from Mandello, where Guzzis are made. The biennial Guzzi rally in the town is fun too.

Interesting reading about your bikes. I have just been given a Guzzi 750 Strada. It will be a restoration project over the next year or so. I'll make it look more like a T3 or V7 etc. The Strada is not a pretty bike otherwise. Have to agree that the Japanese make/have made some terrific bikes. My present other bike is a Suzuki RF600. Ultra reliable and fun. Can't beat the lovely agricultural sound of a Guzzi on song however.

The thing to remember regarding older (I don't know about new ones) Guzzi 750s is that they are stretched 500s, and as such are over stressed. Unlike the 850-1000cc bikes, which are under stressed. I've had a V50 III, and the first thing it did was drop a valve, a common fault. My 1000SP would happily run all day, 2 up, all the way to Italy and back.
Just something to bear in mind when you use them. Mind you, with any of them, if you don't keep on top of them they will bite you. I used to carry a torque wrench when touring to re-torque the heads every few thoushand miles! And spare cables.
My Suzuki SV650S, even with a 700 engine and race exhaust, will happily do anything, including trackdays, without complaint! 45,000 miles and counting.

Al yes the 450 Rebel is quite rare in the UK...I had thought about moving up to the 450 but I love my 250 all the same and it will certainly do at the moment ;)

Loz being given a Guzzi is excellent... you are right about the lovely agricultural sound of a Guzzi on song, they do sound nice ;)
