I hope to be moving to a larger house in the near future and my Spendor SP2's may not be big enough for the new room I will be using for my hifi.

So could folk recommend larger speakers they think I should consider. The room size is approx 16 feet by 14 feet but may be larger.

I will be looking for speakers that can produce a decent amount of scale which is something the SP2,s don't do as they cut the bass fairly high at about 50-60Hz.

I keep being tempted by these, if only I could find a way to get them in the house....

Edingdales. Best big floorstander I've heard.

not heard the castles but would think then superb and pretty much a no brainer at that rediculously low price. The Eglingdales are fabulous

Heard very good things about the Edingdales - are these an off the shelf speaker or self build?

Aye, if you've a bit more money to spend they're an excellent choice.

For my room as it stands though I'd love a pair of those wee ones we had going at Owston. They were special and I even mistook them for the edingdales they were standing next to when we were playing them with your kraken I think.

James, they are a bespoke build by Colin Topps. Website here-

Rich, the smaller ones were the Jenna I think.

that's a lot of speaker for £1500 ( last 2 pairs left according to his website )

They'd be a great deal more from a big manufacturer. Hand built from the ground up too.

A very easy load and sensitive too. They have near electrostatic levels of imaging.

Have a try of the hORNS FP-10.
I have heard the bigger brother the FP-15 and they are amazing. I'm told the 10's don't lack much in comparison.

Ooh, I'd not looked at those castles, very nice!

These distinctly lack WAF but they claim to be flat (+-1dB) from 28Hz to 40kHz and would certainly fill a large room: http://barefootsound.com/minimain12 I'd love to hear them in action.

Puts pay to a lot of box swapping at they're active, just add a pre with XLR outs and job's a good'un

If you want impressive scale, speed\slam, genuinely outstanding bass articulation, dynamics and very high levels of resolution then refurbished Apogee Duetta Sigs. They won't come in cheap, though. Around £5K. Better than £19K, but you'll need more power too.

Strange that nobody has mentioned Tannoys. They are obvious candidates.

Good big ones have power, slam, huge scale, superb imaging, lucidity and detail.

Yup nice pair of maybe refurbished Tannoys gets my approval.

How do they compare to your OB's Ali?

Very well I think. Despite being a multi driver speaker, they have the coherency of a good full range speaker. Imaging is particularly impressive for a large floorstander.

As a box speaker do they sound ...........'boxy'?

No, not so much. Another good thing about them. One of the few I've heard I could happily live with.

Good suggestions folks although getting to listen to some of the recommendations may be tad difficult:)

I do not want anything which has harsh 'rock box' sound as I listen to mainly vocal/Instrumental stuff. I know the Spenders I have are a bit polite but they do work very well with this type of music.

I did like Steves Ruarks at NEBO in January.

Always fancied some ribbon speakers however not sure if they could do heft in large room ?

I have a heard the Dynaudio C4,s and they are superb but maybe bit too big for the room I am looking at.

Those JBLs are not rock boxes although they will rock. :)

They are one of the few reasonably affordable JBL models I have been after for 20 years. I would buy them myself but I'm about to have some extensive house renovation work done and I don't know how much cash I will have left at the end of it.

Nice one Martin, have you heard this JBL model?

About 25 years ago and for about ten minutes :)

No a bit longer than that really but they have been on my wish list for a long time.

Should say I've also heard the Edingdales many are recommending. If you liked the Ruarks at NEBO you won't go far wrong with the Edingdales. They are at least as good as those Ruarks. Which I also liked a lot.

Talking of James B Lancing, I have a 15 inch pair of Altec Lancing 420A dual concentric drivers to instal into my OB's and Altec Lancing 806a horns to run as tweeters, really looking forward to the upgrade, just need to get round to it.

Nah easy just PM me if you want to hear these for real. Not too bad from Birmingham. Bit better than the video in real life.:D;)

They aren't easy listeners, though. As a US refurbisher said they are "not for the faint hearted". Stay at home if you like relaxed sounding gear:)

You absolutely need to get a listen to a pair of Impulse H2's or Ta'us. Room filling scale, proper deep bass down to about 30Hz, work well close to a wall, 93dB sensitivity so easy to drive and not expensive. These days £1k will get you a reasonable pair, £1.5k will get you a pair with off board crossovers and uprated tweeters. Simply stunning speakers for the money. Here's my Ta'us, (the little speakers are Amphion Xenons)

Yes indeedly doodley. I heard them at Owston Hall last year and liked em. Hoping to get a pair to NEBO 6 Ali. Thinking of selling my big Tannoys due to my back complaint making them harder to move them around for cleaning and decorating etc. The Edingdale's might just do the job.
Edingdales. Best big floorstander I've heard.

Steve, would be awesome to get some Edingdales to NEBO.

The wee Jennas made the biggest impression on me at Owston though. Beautiful both in looks and sounded very sweet....

Your room could easily take some Edingdales though. If be interested to know why the zobel network in the crossover though. I'm not an expert in these things by any stretch but wondering whether this is just par for the course with that kind of crossover or an added safety measure.

Just curious.

'Zobel networks can be used to make the impedance a loudspeaker presents to its amplifier output appear as a steady resistance. This is beneficial to the amplifier performance'
says Wikipedia.

Firstly, I believe the crossovers in question were designed by "Scottmoose" of Audio-DIY fame (an expert in loudspeaker design).

The zobel is there for two specific reasons: firstly, as said above, to flatten a steeply rising impedance and secondly, to control woofer output around the crossover region.

Some loudspeakers have very steeply rising impedance and this can make crossover design quite tricky. That's where the zobel comes in. Personally, I only use them where absolutely necessary, where otherwise it becomes difficult to achieve a flat response at crossover. If designing a second/ even order electrical filter, one trick is simply to add a little resistance to the shunt capacitor in the woofer's low pass filter to achieve similar results.

We'll see if we can make the next NEBO and bring the Jenna's and my new NORGE floorstnders.
I do believe there are at least a couple Edingdale owners closer to the NEBO venue than me that one at least could be persuaded to bring along his Edingdales?
