How thick is an original Technics SL1200 MKII platter mat?

I see from your sig you are using an AT440MLa, is this on the stock arm? If so I found a significant improvement swapping the stock Techie headshell to an ADC LMG-1.

Yes, I looked at the MG10 but decided to track down an LMG-1 as it was lighter (just under 8g I think) and offered greater mounting flexibility. IMHO the lower the effective mass for the AT440MLa the better, mounting it on a Hadcock GH228 (total effective mass ~10g) really showed what it was capable of.

As someone who is constantly having to explain to his mechanics the difference between metric and imperial spanners....

Since the turntable is Japanese, I doubt that they would have produced the mat in imperial units. I don't have one to measure, but based on the responses so far I'd go for 5mm as the likely correct thickness.

Desmo is correct.
The standard mat is 5mm.
However, there was/is a 3mm option available although not common.
