Speaking with other Croft owners - this pre has a charm of it's own - there is no 'better' than IMHO but if you like detail and punch you will not be disappointed, personally I preferred this to the more expensive 25 but that is ONLY my opinion ( not looking to start a debate lol )

If it doesn't have a phono stage why put these items on in the first place ?

To save money Glenn Croft uses the same casing throughout the range ..... if you look at photo 4 with the serial number ( hard to read i know ) but it says basic line on the back -
Glenn's response to the credit crunch and an answer to some minor gripes with the modern Croft range, some were asking for even cheaper products and now Glenn has delivered.

I have been listening to it in my system for a week now, purely because Glenn wanted one burned in. Whilst it has some sonic crudeness, there is something to be said the very simple circuit that makes up this pre-amplifier. Somehow the music has areas of openess and honesty that my own heavily modified and more complex Epoch does not reveal in quite the same manner. It is true that I will be very happy to return to the truly hi-fi nature of my Epoch, nevertheless I will be missing certain aspects of the Basic. A true bargain. Available at your local dealer now.

If anyone is interested I also have a Trends 10.2 T amp in VGC ( the best T amp I know of ) ---- bypassing the volume pot ( this can be done by moving jumpers internally but I just open it up to maximum ) in combination with the Croft gives you an utterly superb ' hybrid' amplifier
