I've heard a few pairs and always been impressed. Strangely, they just don't have the typical Monitor Audio sound. To me they seem pretty neutral tonally and there's a hint of Spendor about the smooth, integrated nature of them and a touch of the tight Proac speed in their character. (does that make sense?)

Hi Ali.

The Pro has a very slightly more laid back presentation to the standard SM-70. Not much in it though, they both have far more grunt than you'd expect and sound bloody marvellous. This is solid state Class A done really well.

I thought of trying a pair of Pros and had the opportunity recently, but a single does the job so well, I decided there was little point.

Shame you're not nearer, you could pop round and hear what the Ming Da MC-9 does with them. It's astonishing. It ran circles around my Forte Model 2 and VTL Deluxe pre-amps.

I know, but it's a price I'm happy to pay for the amazing sound quality. You can connect two sources if you use balanced as well. Just use the switch on the back to swap over. I don't bother (yet).

I use it as I get it included with a mobile contract and because my employer has their corporate phones with vodafone I get a hefty discount on it. Pretty good for digging up new stuff and deciding what I'll ultimately think is worth a punt on vinyl.

Hope it wasn't too much trouble to reimage... the DL110 arrived safe and sound mate btw. Cheers.

Mine's Rossi. Not the racer, short for rossicio e bianco - ginger and white. He has very few teeth left, follows me around, is scared of everything (exept dogs that come into our house) and snuggles up to me at night when I listen to music. And he brought a starling through the catflap recently; I saw him as he came in and he gave me such a guilty look! The starling was still alive so I took it out and let it go.

Yes, They all play together in perfect harmony. I suspect that most would say "that can't possibly work properly" but if anyone wants to hear it they are very welcome. Some are hardly on at all, but if you turn them off it is interesting how things don't gel as well.

The speakers are pointing in a strange direction for your listening position. They look interesting, so does that amp. What are they. The bass/bass mid/full range drivers look rather like JBL LE8 units and that looks like a ribbon of some sort.

OK....
The speakers are of my own design. These particular ones are a result of a collaboration between me, who came up with the original concept, Scott Lindgren of Woden Designs and Dave Dlugos of Planet10, who both helped me to refine the design and finally Colin Topps, who did the cabinet build.
They are a tapered quarter-wave, mass - loaded transmission line and are 5 feet tall. The port is hidden and fires downwards through the bottom of the cab. Its output exits via the arches around the base. The drivers are a Fostex FF225WK wide-range main driver, helped out up top by a Monacor RBT95 ribbon tweeter. I call the design "The Metronome" for obvious reasons. Inspiration for the aesthetics came from a combination of the late 60s Danish Larsen Pyramid Omni directional speaker, the Voigt pipe and the Eiffel Tower:)

The amp is also of my own design. It is a 40W, push-pull, straight pentode (no ultra-linear) design, using Genelex reissue KT77 output valves. Input valves are 12SJ7 pentodes. There is no phase splitter as the amp takes the balanced output of my Musical Fidelity M1 DAC directly. Screen grids on both input and output valves are regulated.

Many thanks chaps :) yes Geoff, the JBL's are set to remain as part of my system for the foreseeable future. Indeed, given the close proximity of them to my current seating position, I really look forward to the day they can be positioned further away and driven a bit louder than they are currently running. Having said that, they are still sounding incredibly sweet where they are and I'm over the moon with the work undertaken by Paul & RFC

Give the Densen some time Pete if your getting the full recap done.
Went from "big improvement" to "holy crap" in a few weeks.

My only upcoming change (and probably the last change to my system before I call it done) is swapping out the Mini-1/linear PSU for a "proper" poweramp, a bespoke 300B SET design.

Should be a bit of a change...? ;)

So cool, this is one of my favourites on this forum. Great stuff.

Appreciate the kind words Matt... it sounds as good as it looks too

Ja know? i have to confess i have never heard a pair of domestic JBL speakers ever. How shocking is that?

If your ever in this neck of the woods Steve, your more than welcome to come and have a listen :)

Give the Densen some time Pete if your getting the full recap done. Went from "big improvement" to " holy crap" in a few weeks.

Most definitely will be Gaz... I'm in no hurry to offload either, so best of both worlds :)

Ok so I'll join in the fun of posting a selfie of me in my new music listening room with my new speakers. Guys please note I have only 2-pair the Edingdales speakers left so when they are gone................These can be finished in the veneer of choice.

Please note the XO boards have not yet been installed inside the new speakers as we have been fine tuning things, but now they are sorted and the Xo'ers will be installed soon and will tidy up my room somewhat.

Yes I just love lounging about in moccasins they are so cumfy.

Here's a photo of the listening end to my room. Three very cumfy swivel reclining chairs each with footstools. It has been known for me to nod off listening to music with a large glass of Shiraz.

Truly shocking... Indeed, I'd go as far to say that it's a spanking offence! :spank: :whippin:

Bare your botty for daddy....

Marco.

Are the JBL L100s (with the foam "chocolate bar" grills ) 'domestic'? If so, then yes.

NO mate.
From top to bottom the power amps on the right of the photo are:

Conrad-Johnson LP66S/S2,
LDA (Long Dog Audio) 300B SE Monoblocs,
Musical Fidelity A300CR Dual Mono power amp.

Colin,

How would you describe the sound of the LDA 300BSE?

Always fancied some but never heard any.

Colin,

How would you describe the sound of the LDA 300BSE?

Describing sounds of amps is rather tricky really. All I can say is I have heard a few 300B SE and PSE amps and by far the sound of these amps to me is betters them. I have to say the amps are built by me but to NickG design. It also has some mods with DC heater modules designed by Andrew Lehane and has adjustable B+ so changing from say TJ meshplates to PSVane treasure tubes you can optimise the output voltage for that particular tube.

As you don't live that far from me you are most welcome to come over to ToppsTowers and have a listen?

Send me PM if you want to set up something?

Regards
Colin

PS. Stratmangler has commented to me in the past that in the past he was never to enthused with the sound of 300B amps until he had heard these. So must be a good testament. They are a perfect match for my Edingdale speakers.

Wife and 4 year old stop any better positioning :)

Hence no clutter too.

Thankfully the Tannoys are front ported or I wouldnt have bothered at all.
