yes, her Fatman is a Carbon ( not the Carbon Edition 2 )

the good thing is these older iPods are very cheap to buy, she just bought another iPod 80GB Classic 5.5 generation for £25, the seller was selling it as Parts because the hard drive stopped working, so she replaced it with a 512GB SSD drive, all her CD's were converted to lossless FLAC files, which I helped her do about 5 years ago, but this meant we had to use Rockbox on her iPod to play FLAC, she did not like iTunes anyway, preferring to have her music collection organised by herself not Apple.

Her headphones are Shure IEM's model E500 ( same as the SE530) , the 5.5 iPod and the E500 combo sounds pretty terrific playing FLAC, no need for her to try and beat this quality wise ( law of diminishing returns and all that)

she then wanted a nice iPod dock for the kitchen around xmas 2007, and the Fatman Carbon was bought at £400, the speakers were given to her son to use in his bedroom, and replaced with some Artcoustic Bounce One speakers ( that we installed in the ceiling) , the 98dB sensitivity of these speakers combines really well with the Fatman tube amp which is only 25w per channel, but what an incredible sound it is, far better than many so called Hi-Fi stereo setups I have heard over the years :-)

the 5.5 gen iPod uses the Wolfson WM8758 DAC which sounds better than most iPhones and iTouch's, whoever you buy from make sure they confirm the logic board number as 802-1975A because this confirms it is a 5.5 gen model and can support SSD drives up to 512GB

also check that the Serial Number ends with any of the 13 below and you are golden :
V9K
V9P
V9M
V9R
V9L
V9N
V9Q
V9S
WU9
WUA
WUB
WUC
X3N

A side benefit of using the new SSD drive is the iPod becomes a bit lighter in weight, and you get much better battery life, you should combine this with upgrading the original battery to a high capacity battery (2000 mha rather than the standard 540 mha) which means of over 24 hours of continuous audio play. The SSD drive is also less prone to damage as it has no moving parts, so no more 'dreaded click of death from the disc drive'

for the iPod Classic 5.5 generation models ( on the back at the bottom is small print under the 80GB size )

mine says "Serial No 9E806600DV9P" - it's the last 3 characters that are important, ie on mine V9P

I have a white 5.5 gen 80GB with the Rockbox firmware and a mixture of WAV, FLAC and 320kb MP3 files, and have used lots of headphones with it, just using the headphone out on the iPod ( none of this messing with Headphone Amps and External DAC's, just more to carry around) , it really is quite an impressive listen with rips from my CD collection over the last 10 years, I am thinking of getting another iPod 5.5 and doing what my sister did, 512GB SSD drive and longer lasting battery, these things are going to be gold dust in a few years time as they dry up on ebay and gumtree.
