One of the Leaks has a blotchy top. I show both for comparison.

Is there a solution that doesn't involve sawdust and glasspaper?

Glasspaper is the last thing I would use, fine wire wool is best. Is there an alternative to rubbing down and re polishing? The short answer is no I'm afraid. If you don't want to do it yourself, PM me. :)

Any idea what it's from? Is one sun-bleached and the other been polished with something with a stain in it?

Judging by the open grain to the edge of the naff cabinet, it looks as if it has been stripped and then badly finished with a stain and varnish. Only real solution is to start again but then you have to match to the rest of the finish.

Not a quick or easy job I suspect. Get a quote and let someone else take the strain. If you are intent on a bit of DIY then wire wool and some grain filler would be the first line of attack for me.

It seems that damp has been allowed in while they were being stored. I had hoped it would dry out but although it has lightened somewhat there is still a long way to go.
