For the remainder of 2015 and assuming my pension lump sum comes in, I am going to upgrade my Thorens TD160 MkII. First thing, a brand new hardwood plinth courtesy of ebay and a nice man in Barnsley. This will probably be a white maple plinth so that it goes with the decor. Next, a Jelco SA750 D tonearm to replace the Linn LVV and finally a Dynavector DV20 high output moving coil cartridge which will go into my Croft Micro Basic preamp. At least that is the plan. As usual, it is all dependent upon funds.

Sounds good from me too. Look forward to pics. Could I ask who is the nice man in Barnsley doing a plinth for you. I'm also looking for a nice replacenent plinth.

Thanks

Laurence

Well, so far, I have decided to go with a solid dark oak finish on the plinth for 175 quid all in. I shall be ordering it next week for delivery the week after whilst I am away from work. I guess then the fun starts and that will be fitting it. My TD160 has a miniature plug for the power so that is going to require some adapting. At times like these, I wish it had a captive lead. I shall post finished article photos as soon as I have the thing fitted.

Here is my Thorens TD160 B MkII after the fitting of my new Maple hardwood plinth. From start to finish, the fitting took around thirty minutes. I haven't had time to try it out sonically but at least the motor still spins. I reckon this looks so much better than the awful old black thing I took off it tonight. I now have to decide on either a Jelco SA750D tonearm or an Origin Live Onyx and then a Dynavector DV20 H M/C cartridge.

Many thanks Grant. Not bad for 175 quid and half an hour of my life.

Very smart Shaun.

Don't dismiss the LV-V arm. With a good headshell it's very capable with MCs.

If you want to damp the TT plinth and baseplate, these work rather well if strategically placed: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SRM-TECH-SORBOTHANE-DAMPING-KIT-FOR-TURNTABLES-/331568564231?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d3306c807

Geoff, yeah, thanks so much for the advice. I would like to keep the LVV arm to be honest as I really like it and it is in wonderful nick and of course I shelled out almost 50 quid for the Sumiko headshell. What I save on the turntable mods I shall spend on future Croft Series 7 monoblocks.

It's a no brainer. Go for the OL Onyx. Yes, you heard right. Current trends dictate that the Jelco and it's surrounding industry is the way to go. I have a Jelco on my Lenco having previously had a Linn Basik LVX in situ and i have to say that the LVX showed the Jelco a clean set of heels. I have an Encounter that i use on another TT which i love. When i was looking for another arm for my 1210 i decided to look at an Onyx and promptly borrowed one from a friend. It out performed the Jelco and then some. I am afraid i simply don't agree with the cognoscenti with regards to the Jelco.

OK suits me just fine; Origin Live Onyx it is then. I have been thinking that if funds permit, I may well get an Origin Live Silver but then I would have to keep the OM40 however, I would upgrade it to an OM40 Super with a new cartridge body.

I had noticed a slight groan when starting the platter at LP speed so I oiled the motor shaft using bearing oil and voila...! The slight groan has gone away...!! Maybe I could try some on my bloody knees :(

is the belt nice and tight as that(looseness) can cause it too. as can any grease residues on the belt path...Just a thought.

If you have removed the platter it could be just the shaft bedding back in, a little oil will help as I think you have found out
