If (like me) you haven't gone down the NAS route to serve your Pi and are content with plug-in USB drives I would thoroughly recommend trying an SSD drive, either in a case or with a USB adapter.

I did tonight and the acceleration in process is tremendous - particularly with updating the library. I would also venture that there also seems to be a slight sonic improvement - perhaps only in my head though... :lol:
I had one kicking about already but Tesco have a Maxell 128GB in a case for £49 at the mo' on their eBay site.

Thinking about using SSD drives in a NAS server at some point but can't find a reasonably priced enclosure to suit yet....

Good call as there is no moving parts it's going to use less power too.

Aye - and less heat ...
Clincher for me is the access speed difference though, particularly when updating latest recordings on desktop, whizzes through uncompressed files in seconds.
Converted both my Macs to SSD a few years back and the speed difference in every operation is amazing; this is a fair assessment of the pros and cons of HDD v SSD:

The current draw is very minimal from an SSD drive too.

Alas, 128mb is way too small for my collection. So I'd be looking at a 1/2 TB drives.

that was gb not mb . 128 gb would just cover my flac collection and leave 30g for upgrades. then i would need a second one..next time i buy an hdd i may go solid state

lol.. oops... :doh: still not enough though. 128mb HDD... .haha! - now that's going back a bit.

500GB SSD is definitely a pricier option but even then the benefits in terms of reliability and longevity, as well as the huge performance bump, pay that back easily in my view.

Plus you save oodles by not needing an additional separate power supply - and never get the infamous 'clicking of death' routine :lol:

SSD certainly has its attractions and I see you can get a 500GB USB Samsung for approx £200, however, you can buy a dual bay NSA320s v2 NAS box for £70 and a 3TB WD Red Drive for £90....£160 all in and I can use it to store more than just music and the NAS can do more things in its own right...

Admittedly not a cheap option but I use a pair of Samsung 1TB SSD drives in a RAID array in a MacBook Pro.
My entire CD collection is ripped in lossless format which uses up about 1TB. This streams wirelessly.
I also get pretty good performance as a bonus :D :-

Fitted a 128GB SSD to my PC a coulple of years back, best upgrade I ever made. :)

Much less = £150 ..... or a Crucial 500gb for £140; both at dabs.com (not even the cheapest online source)

And of course 2.5 inch SSD drives can also be bunged in a NAS if desired (with suitable adapters @ £5 - £10)

Interesting, where about's on dabs.com? I could only see the bare Crucial 500GB drive for £165...

Yes, SSD can go in the NAS box but ultimately it's performance will be throttled by the Network interface..

Edit: not to worry found the bare drive for £140 on Amazon, caddy approx £5! Hmmmm....
