View Full Version : Big, tall convertibles?

I'm thinking of moving on the Lexus GS430 and possibly the MX-5 as well, going down to a single car.

I'm on the hunt for a large, 4 seat convertible and the wife fancies something taller so we can see out when pootling around the country lanes with the roof down, as we do a LOT on the Mazda but of course it's pretty low. We hired a 4x4 recently in Italy that she really enjoyed because of the view ... looking for a bit of that in a single car.

I'm fresh out of ideas though. Budget is £10k-ish. Any suggestions? I was looking at a Volvo C70 but that's just saloon height, ideally it would be taller than that.

Fuel cost isn't really a consideration as I have a perk fuel card.

Tom I can't think of a proper "Big, Tall Convertible"...

However if you want the very biggest 4x4 I can thoroughly recommend a Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon ESPECIALLY the 4.7L V8 petrol auto... we have one and it is whisper quiet and rides very smoothly on it's air suspension... it's like a huge limousine to travel in... Is it thirsty? Oh yes it is!! but it is worth it for the comfort and quietness on offer

Sorry they don't do a convertible... ;)

As a car I'm pretty happy with the Lexus ... the wife doesn't drive though and I'm having the expense of running two cars, a convertible (which we love - we go out often, summer evenings, weekends, in the Madza) and the Lexus for grown up stuff. I'm just wondering if there's a way to combine the two (with enough space for a couple of suitcases). Maybe there isn't!

I can't think of a tall convertible.
I think the closest you will get is a SUV type car with a large sun roof.

SWB Land Rover Defender with the rag top. Not sure they still make them but I suppose they are out there on the s/h market. Bit military/agricultural but ticks the boxes.

Good idea. You could park where you liked and nip into the shops whilst the wife holds the traffic wardens at bay with the .50 Cal :)

Tom

You'll regret parting with the 430. They're few and far between, and according to some sources, the most developed and reliable V8 in history (which is why the LS used them for years). Why not keep that and look for a slightly more "grown up" ragtop, something you can have a bit of fun in. Didn't Suzuki do a 4wd 2.5 V6 ragtop a few years back? Jeep Wrangler would also be a hoot and give you what you want or something of that nature. I couldn't recommend anything with "Landrover or Rangerove" as a badge. We have loads round here and the local Mech is always feeding us nightmare stories about their major reliability issues (had a newish Range rover Vogue in recently with hardly any miles on which had dumped its engine oil into the gearbox!).
