Audio Technica AT-630 SUT help - brown sticky stuff inside

Hey all,

I was having a bit of trouble with the cables on my AT-630 so I took it apart so I can soldered in some new ones.

Inside however was some sticky brownish stuff cover the internal wires and stuff that is disintegrating and falling apart. I thought it might be some old foam that had gone funny but there was also some small foam padding as well

Does anyone know what it and if it is in some way required?

I'd imagine it's impregnated foam that's gone dry. Probably for hum/vibration damping. You could probably secure and isolate the innards with a blob or two of silicone sealant.

Is there an alternative to using silicone sealant so I can open it up again in the future if needed?

You should be able to reopen it using silicone, just use a sensibly sized amount in blobs no bigger than you need. You can use a very thin wipe of oil or grease on opposing faces to stop the silicone adhering. That should make it easy to open.

You could always try replacing the foam rubber with cotton wool. Just an idea - and if it doesn't work can be easily removed.

I managed to change the cables. The new cables were thicker so it was a bit of a challenge to get them through the rubber cap/cable holder and to solder in place. I didn't have any silicone but did use cotton wool. It all seemed fairly secure. It sounds a lot better with the new cables. I don't think the old RCAs were getting a good contact so I immediately noticed a difference with the new cables :)
