Hi everyone, love the site, been dipping in and out for ages but never registered till now :-)
love playing records from my youth, mostly seventies and eighties stuff, Dire Straights to Luther, and everything in between I guess, none of those LP's have any compression on them, and some of the better produced ones sound marvellous, always on the look out for LP's and EP's ( 45rpm) that look in mint or very good condition, have about 1000 records, but a lot of them are pretty naff as well, must have a clear out one day.
my main system (well source) has pretty much stayed the same for over 40 years, SL-120 deck, SME 3009 Series II Improved tonearm and Shure V15 III cartridge with Jico SAS stylus. Real seventies rig that was pretty good back in the day, all my mates bought Linn ( both Axis and Sondek ) and yet whenever they came over to my place they could not really figure out why my setup was more dynamic ( if that is the right word ) .
in the late nineties my old Yamha CR-1000 amp stopped working ( after many mods and repairs ), it was a magical amplifier, luckily for me the chap who serviced my CR-1000 had a big Yamaha amp in the shop for repair that he could not fix because he was waiting for some prices for parts from Japan, but it still worked in 2 channel stereo mode fine, so he gave it to me to have a play with, knowing that it would power my old NS-1000 speakers without any major drama (I bought those speakers with the CR-1000 amp back in 1976, boy was it a hot summer that year) , he was right, this new fangled Home Theatre Yamaha DSP-A2070 amp was a monster, but it was not long before I blew the tweeters on the NS-1000 and so back to the repair shop in or around summer 2000, he begged me to take a new set of demo speakers that had just come in from Yamaha, the simple enough looking NS-300's, and come back in a few weeks to report back my findings, well I was astonished how good these speakers were, and still have them to this day :-)
The phono on the 2070 is not too bad either, have played with about 8 or 10 different phone pre's over the years, and to be honest not one of them was so special that I needed to buy it. I only buy MM carts, and have not (yet) caved in to the whole MC mantra, mainly because very high end MM or MI carts are not that bad after all the eighties hype that centrered around MC (I really like the B&O MMC1 and SMMC2 carts in my system, they sound OK to me)
Listening to a lot of vinyl and CD's using headphones in the evenings, have two AKG models, the K-340 from 1979 that my Dad used back then, and he passed them on to me, and 10 years ago I bought another AKG model, the K-601, I rotate them around a bit, but the K-340 are superior when it comes to piano, they really sing, but for general listening (to almost anything) the 601's have been great, probably the most amazing purchase I have ever made in audio, they just do what they say on the tin, and I am on the look out for another pair !
that's probably more waffle than is needed, like I say it's really nice to be here on AoS, and I'm looking forward to contributing on the forum :-)
