How or why have you put whatever is written or included in your signature? Perhaps there's some rather obscure, deep and meaningful 'message' in there, if so, why is its meaning personal and of relevance to you?

Just a link to my gallery for me Marco, like you say... a picture (or a few) is worth a thousand words. I do however like some of the signatures on other peoples profile when they say something funny or profound, yours used to say something about hifi being like wine, Martin has his 'ten cent life's but Shane's (Southall) was the funniest, and rudest.

My signature is a quote from the designer of my car, if I recall correctly he said it at a 10th anniversary meeting for owners, seems quite simple and apt in this day and age of gibberish.?

i was feeling a bit pissed off with growing old and being retired the other evening so I changed it to a 'poor me' signature.
I expect it'll change to something cheerful and positive when my mojo gets recharged.
For me it's a brief and simple list of the items in my brief and simple system. Just lets the folks know where I'm at. I have toyed with the idea of adding what wires I use but then it just gets all cluttered up.

My signature I believe to be true, most people are merited for the bull they can remember from schooling, very little of it prepares for the world outside the classroom. I believe you can train any sensible person to do pretty much any job. Qualifications are not that important unless the powers that be decide they are , which they have ( say it and will be done )Talent does not guarantee success , kindness does not guarantee loyalty and honesty and above all personality don't mean shit. It stopped making sense a long time ago.

Strange as it may seem, quite a few folk ask me about what kit I've got - and down to the 'nitty-gritty', too... *So* I list it ALL (down to the last plug) in my signature, thus when I'm asked the question I can simply say: 'Look in my sig, mate!' It saves them having to go searching for those details in my profile, and me to continually keep listing it. Simples :)
Also, another reason is that I like to advertise the 'AoS-endorsed' kit I use, such as all the Techy stuff, Paul Hynes PSUs, etc, so that it shows up on Google searches (traders here have even asked me to do this, apparently because it helps sales), as it very often results in attracting new members to AoS (folk interested in modifying their Techies) - and the best way to do that is to include all those 'bits' in my signature, as I post a lot, and so subsequently the contents of my signature show up a lot on Google searches.
*That* is it. My signature is therefore what it is for no other reason, so I have chosen a very small size of text, in order to keep the list as inconspicuous as possible.
As for the quotes in my signature, the first one is all about how I only allow nice, happy, friendly and contented people (non-irritants), into my life, or for that matter into the AoS membership.
Life's too short to share the company of the complete opposites, in that respect, because it just gets you down (plus I'm not used to it) - and I like to wake up with a smile on my face every morning and look forward to the day ahead - not having to deal with miserable, po-faced, pains in the asses!!
The second quote does actually need updating, given my current love affair with the RPi! :D
However, my heart still lies with vinyl replay, and so my T/T is still my favourite part of my system. Therefore, everyone should know now why my signature is so detailed :ner:

My signature kind of speaks for itself, but if not, it makes reference to Thomas Edison's 'Tone Tests' of the early 1900's where Edison manipulated the tests to produce the results he wanted. I think that still holds true and Edison has been replaced by those who use audio forum's to manipulate opinion to market product, be that deliberate or through a misguided enthusiastic proxy - placebo and the Emperor's new clothes syndrome can have a huge impact on susceptible and impressionable people who might avoid being judged as stupid or intellectually inferior to others - pluralistic ignorance is all too common on internet forums.
Edison as well as being an audio engineer years ahead of his time, was also the consummate audio salesman and was often quoted as saying, “People will hear what you tell them to hear”. The expectations and perceptions of his listeners were manipulated before his tests to produce a more predicable outcome. Audience members were given a concert program before his 'Tone Tests' that clearly told them exactly what they would be listening to, how amazing it will sound and what an appropriate response might be . . . . sound familiar?
The music stave . . . well that just indicates for me it's predominantly about the music :)

Honestly, I find it a pain to have to scroll past really long signatures, especially if I'm viewing the site from a phone. It's surely wrong if the signature is 5 times longer than the actual post. If some one wants to see the list of kit that someone owns, then can't they look at your profile page?

One of the benefits of a sig (apart from the nicotine) is where there is request for advice such as "what preamp?" - anyone wanting to chip in immediately has a reference point.

Internet forums (especially audio ones) could I believe provide a rich source of material for any budding psychologist - differing social groups locking horns so passionately, when in reality most of us should just be having a glass of wine/beer and listening to music, instead of throwing our toys out of the pram. Jesus Gordon, what happened to the cat in your Flickr?
Still not entirely sure. His name is Orange.fr as one might suppose. If you see him run, you would think that we had an orange cheetah. Incredible length in the body and none of the other cats can get near him. We assume he must have been doing his normal speed and got caught on something. We were sitting one evening and he just started shaking and it was only then we saw the gash. No blood or anything. He had eaten his supper quite normally just delayed shock I guess.
The vet patched him up as you see but it seems he caught some sort of infection/virus as a few days later, he stopped eating. Hugely enlarged kidney and a heart murmur were the results. It's taken him a couple of months to recover and he is, once again, chasing the others all over the garden and beyond. He has lost a bit of speed and gets a bit puffed out now but we thought we were going to lose him as he was so poorly. One shouldn't have favourite amongst pets of course but if we did it would be him. He is the sweetest thing, no nasty side at all and cuddles constantly.
Eats like a small horse now and supplements his diet with what seems like a dozen mice a day. I wish he'd eat them outside though as we get tired of cleaning up the patches of red in the kitchen. At least he keeps to the tiles that are easy to clean!!

Poor bugger, I'm sure he'll be back up to full speed once the shoulder's fully healed. My 1 year old Tom (Walé) sounds like Orange, never shown me his teeth or claws, loves a cuddle but has a taste for birds not mice, the innards I can live with but the feathers get everywhere.

None of our cats catch many birds so feathers are a very rare thing. The place is alive with birds though with constant song so quite why our four 'killers' ignore them I'm not sure. Perhaps the number of mice just means an easier life. We have a pair of Hoopoes that spend loads of time in our back garden and they and the cats just stare at each other and then carry on with what they were doing.

The voting percentages in Scotland show that the Conservative share of the vote is 14.9%, which probably won't change much in the next 5 years http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election/2015/results/scotland.
The SNP "seats in Westminster landslide" has given the Labour Party (along with the Liberal Democrats) a right Royal kicking, but curiously enough done f**k all damage to the Conservative Party presence North of the border.

Click on settings top right on your screen
Then look on the left panel and see signature , click that and type what you want then click save

I've been meaning to post to this thread all week. Messing with Pi and other matters have got in the way.
First a tale from work, sorry if computers are another world to you. Our man in charge of computer security realised that https sites, supposedly certified secure, were becoming a source of threats. He got new software that checked them for all sorts. He formed the view that he had to tell everyone each time they went to an https site that it was being checked. A page was introduced saying all about the new feature and if you didn't want your visit checked for security to go back. Why you would go back if it was work related I could never imagine, as my employer they can do what they want, but thats my narrow mind. A whole page just slowed things up.
It was a real pain if you used https pages regularly having to ignore the page you had read once and click on OK, EVERY bloody time. I went to see him as he has known me for ages. John do we have to keep seeing this page for every visit can't it be smart enough to know you have seen it, read it and not appear again? To him he must tell everyone and could not follow my thinking. Last week the pain in the ass page went. He realised he didn't have to do the every visit telling. Big thanks to him.
I guess there is no way to wrap this up so it is my way to get issed off by needless repetition. All the signatures that are more than 1 line can be bigger, will take up more space, than the single line post the poster is sending!!. Visit other forums and TaS members from here do it to some extend. Very few on Wigwam and with PFM most don't bother.
So for those who wish to tell others for WHATEVER reason what their kit is about how about a post to the gallery and if it is necessary to you, a link to that page as a signature. Beautifully elegant and avoids the distraction, mentally switching off to seeing repeated tracts of text. As and when some asks about your kit send them a link to the full page with pictures, even better than a signature. For those on slow connections it will speed up forum pages loading immensely, that's phones, dialup (because they cannot get anything else) and people on barely internet speeds.
I am sure all sorts of reasons not to do it will become apparent. Why not give it a shot?
The signature I had and was reminded to remove was about a time when a couple of Moderators (strangely no long posting as moderators) decided they could read my mind and knew my motivations and had a talk resulting in me being banned. Of course what they were upset about was removed, became hearsay not possible to challenge their recollection for facts visible to anyone. They would not make a living in the legal profession, loosing the evidence of the case they are making! As Marco said in one of his posts - I don't need such crap, why make life a pain for yourself just to participate in some subjects, left AoS to read only. Some folks here are helpful and are good contacts to make.
I'm really (really) not a fan of long signatures (perhaps that is hypocritical as I have a banner style signature) - but when the signature is thee times longer than the associated post things are getting a bit silly IMO. However, as I mostly view this forum using Tapatalk it's a bit academic as that app doesn't show any signatures :).
Was it something in particular that kicked this off for you Alan?

Under Forum Actions General Settings there are options to turn off Signatures
Also can change the forum style but that dont work for me

First a tale from work, sorry if computers are another world to you. Our man in charge of computer security realised that https sites, supposedly certified secure, were becoming a source of threats. He got new software that checked them for all sorts. He formed the view that he had to tell everyone each time they went to an https site that it was being checked. A page was introduced saying all about the new feature and if you didn't want your visit checked for security to go back. Why you would go back if it was work related I could never imagine, as my employer they can do what they want, but thats my narrow mind. A whole page just slowed things up.
It was a real pain if you used https pages regularly having to ignore the page you had read once and click on OK, EVERY bloody time. I went to see him as he has known me for ages. John do we have to keep seeing this page for every visit can't it be smart enough to know you have seen it, read it and not appear again? To him he must tell everyone and could not follow my thinking. Last week the pain in the ass page went. He realised he didn't have to do the every visit telling. Big thanks to him.
I guess there is no way to wrap this up so it is my way to get issed off by needless repetition. All the signatures that are more than 1 line can be bigger, will take up more space, than the single line post the poster is sending!!. Visit other forums and TaS members from here do it to some extend. Very few on Wigwam and with PFM most don't bother.
So for those who wish to tell others for WHATEVER reason what their kit is about how about a post to the gallery and if it is necessary to you, a link to that page as a signature. Beautifully elegant and avoids the distraction, mentally switching off to seeing repeated tracts of text. As and when some asks about your kit send them a link to the full page with pictures, even better than a signature. For those on slow connections it will speed up forum pages loading immensely, that's phones, dialup (because they cannot get anything else) and people on barely internet speeds.
I am sure all sorts of reasons not to do it will become apparent. Why not give it a shot?
The signature I had and was reminded to remove was about a time when a couple of Moderators (strangely no long posting as moderators) decided they could read my mind and knew my motivations and had a talk resulting in me being banned. Of course what they were upset about was removed, became hearsay not possible to challenge their recollection for facts visible to anyone. They would not make a living in the legal profession, loosing the evidence of the case they are making! As Marco said in one of his posts - I don't need such crap, why make life a pain for yourself just to participate in some subjects, left AoS to read only. Some folks here are helpful and are good contacts to make.

Also, another reason is that I like to advertise the 'AoS-endorsed' kit I use, such as all the Techy stuff, Paul Hynes PSUs, etc, so that it shows up on Google searches (traders here have even asked me to do this, apparently because it helps sales), as it very often results in attracting new members to AoS (folk interested in modifying their Techies) - and the best way to do that is to include all those 'bits' in my signature, as I post a lot, and so subsequently the contents of my signature show up a lot on Google searches.

Agreed, with signatures switched off, things look much better, I'm sorry it took 9 pages of this thread before I found out about this option.

Not much use to the none members who do have to wait for a heavily signatured pagefull of pictures to load and may be in fact off putting to them. Lets go to that snappier site, I don't need this thinks a potential member.
A notion that I have never seen aired (not that I have been looking) is what the disadvantages are, slow loading and the sheer intimidation of such a huge and smaller inventories of parts. Something I have no aspiration to own, I love simple elegant solutions, that is why Pi and PI-DAC+ appealed, look no cables momma.
Slow loading, not everyone has super fibre loading in a flash broadband, dial up and iffy satellite is some peoples lot and of course the mobile fraternity.
So until you do try out the minimal signature option you will never know how it improves and increases the people numbers and quality of members as much if not more so than you believe having it does. It is known as Devils advocate a useful test to apply to long held beliefs.
Anyway I am sure you don't want or welcome that type of discussion and my employers don't want me misusing my time when I should be using their machine.
On another matter as you might see on TaS I have tried Moode and it hasn't done a connecting spinner once so I am staying with that for a while. Nice library feature if a little early.

I'll always respond positively to constructive criticism, and if anyone [other than the losers on certain sites with nothing else better to do with their sad and lonely lives than scrutinise what people put in their forum signatures - some of them, would you believe, are so risibly pathetic that they even post on forums, slagging other folk off, when they're on holiday to beautiful countries such as Italy, no less, probably because their rather controlling 'Russian bride' isn't up for a hump], thought that the reason for my rather wordy signature was to 'willy-wave', then hopefully the sensible ones will now realise that's simply not the case.

TBH, if that (such a trivial thing) was enough to put anyone off from posting here, then I don't think that their presence would've been much missed! ;)
You have to understand that when joining ANY Internet forum, the idea is that YOU fit in with it, not that IT fits in with you. Whilst we'll always listen to and (if necessary) act upon the sensible suggestions/observations of our members, we're certainly not here to pander to their every whim. In that respect, in many ways, AoS 'is what it is', so you either like it or lump it!
We're not here to win popularity contests.

I also enjoy using Moode, with the RPi (and indeed access it via a spare SD card), but I have to say that Volumio has worked faultlessly for me since day one of using it, and so I often can't be arsed changing back and forth. I just sit back and enjoy the music :cool:

There really is no justification for posting crap on forums when you're on holiday (supposedly "taking the piss" out of someone), when in reality all you're doing is taking the piss out of yourself, by looking utterly pathetic, so that it results in YOU being the laughing stock!
If you're normal [and in a healthy and fulfilled relationship with someone] you should have far better things to occupy your time!! :D
When I'm on holiday in Italy (or anywhere else for that matter), the very last thing I'm thinking about is forums - even this place; Del and I too busy enjoying ourselves together, for me, like some sad asshole, to disappear on my own and use the hotel's wi-fi to post mindless pish on an Internet forum!! :eyebrows:
But then, maybe that's what happens when you're lonely, dried-up, old and bored... I guess one should always feel sorry for those who are less fortunate than you ;)

Since the post I put on the wam mentioning the next NEBO has been removed for reasons known only to their management I'm plugging NEBO 6 in my signature on this and other forums.

However, I know that it irks him beyond belief (which is the whole point), much as he tries to disguise it - and more importantly, it's not something that I wouldn't say to the man's face (and plenty more besides). Would he have the balls to say to me, face to face, what he writes on his joke 'forum'? I doubt it - and if he did, only one thing would be destined to happen.
When you sit behind a computer, like a coward, and spout bile in the direction of someone on a daily basis, it stands to reason that the intended target is at some point going to justifiably retaliate - and do so by whatever effective means are available. Given the level of abuse I've had to put up with for years, from Dr Dunce, the restraint I show on here is really quite remarkable!
Far less tolerant people than me would've lost the plot by now. However, I'm a great believer in karma, and in what goes around, comes around... ;)

We seem to have had this conversation before!! However, I reckon the best means of defence/attack is to just ignore the whole thing. If you didn't go there to read the bile, you would be blissfully unaware of it and would feel no need to retaliate, no matter how justified.
Since I got tired of the schoolboys over there, I have never returned and so have no idea what they say to/about whom.
