Tannoy's My New Toy !!

Well 'if you can't beat them then join them' springs to mind..

I have just taken delivery of a pair of Tannoy System 800's. I know some may not call them 'proper Tannoy's' but I think they are a great introduction to the Tannoy DC sound

I have to admit they are COMPLETELY different to the Heresy's.... but I am already loving their sound...they are really growing on me..;)

My amp takes about half an hour or so to really sound it's best but it is now driving the Tannoy's really well, the volume knob is a bit further round than when driving the Klipsch but not too far ... they seem a pretty easy speaker to drive..

I am getting used to the way they sound with every track/cd and I really like what they are doing in my room...

I will report back when I have listened to them some more but so far so good...:)

Well you may well be correct Andrew but at the moment they do sound quite superb... further listening will tell me whether they are 'better' than the Klipsch though... I will post again once I get a complete handle on their sound... ;)

I have had to initially squeeze them in front of the Klipsch as my back wasn't up to moving them out of the way ;)... they are currently on Partington Dreadnought stands (which I almost put up for sale, glad I didn't!!) with some Blu Tack on the tops to hold them firm'ish...

That's a shame Grant if you have to sell them. I've had absolutely no problems with the 800's.. I've just kinda chucked them in front of the Klipsch with a bit of toe-in and they seem quite happy as they are... I will probably experiment with their placement a bit when I can muster up enough strength to move the Klipsch out of the way... but not yet a while... ;)

The phase coherency is what does it for me with Tannoy DCs, everthing is so well isolated and positioned that the music just pours over you..... Welcome to the club :)

Ah so my description wasn't too far off the mark Paul, I hoped it'd make sense to someone. Now whether they beat the Klipsch it's too early to tell, and I think the Klipsch are a hard act to follow to be honest, but I like what I hear so far

I still haven't swapped back to the Klipsch... mostly because I am really enjoying the Tannoy's.. I will swap back some time soon'ish though...;)

The Tannoy's are really sounding good though... they are what I would describe as 'silky smooth' as well as 'articulate' that I have already mentioned. They have absolutely no listener fatigue and can be listened to for hours on end with their smooth delivery

I have no idea at the moment whether they are 'better' than the Klipsch but it doesn't really matter as I am enjoying them so much.. I doubt I will ever sell the Heresy's as they are so rare in the UK. If it turns out, once I put them back in the system, that I prefer the Tannoy's then I will probably just 'moth ball' them for a while

Maybe I am a Tannoy convert after all... :D

Grant I think you are right they are 'my kind of speaker' I love them already... UPGRADE ?? that's a nightmare to think about as I think It'd take a lot to beat these which probably means a lot of extra dosh.... you said your Tannoy's were "provisionally spoken for" so did you not sell them yet ?

Yep the heaviest i have is an original pair of Bowers DM2A's wonderful sounding but lifting them is a pain they dont get much play time but i will dig them out and have a play this week though....Normal ladies i know dont really like HI-FI but love music though my mum and sister for one. I guess I am not a 'normal' lady then... I've been 'into' hifi since about 1985 'ish... I love new hifi toys and my Tannoy's are just the latest addition.. funny you should mention a glass of 'red' as that's exactly what I have at the moment and my toones are playing too... :D

On a more serious note....

My 800's are sounding so good tonight which I put down in part to getting used to their presentation... They are so different to the Heresy's but I do love thier sound... I would urge anyone to try some DC's. I think I am now a convert to the DC sound and that's with a fairly cheap pair so I can only imagine what a DC further up the range would sound like... However I won't be parting with these.. They are quite addictive...

Sorry to push the Tannoy's but they really are sounding very good indeed. My Oto, at about 10w, seems to drive them just fine with plenty in reserve so the spec from Tannoy suggesting an amp of 60w - 180w just seems crazy to me :)

Yes, my 16 watt WAD runs mine very easily too and thats including big woofers. Think they are 92 db so yours should be similar. Not just that but they are an easy load

Boy that's a lot of watts Roy :eek: ... I've never had an amp with anything near that... I think the most powerful amp I've ever owned was about 40w...and the lowest was a mere 1.5w :D

Sounds to be about right. When I had mine in I felt the drivers were to low and popped them on small stands to get the drivers at or very near ear level at sit position. My other thought that I may try is to angle them up at front slightly to achieve similar effect. ...hey you dont try you dont find out

Thanks Grant... I might also try to angle them slightly at the front to see how that affects the sound.. The trouble is, as the 800's are quite big, they are kind of perched on top of the stand top with a lot of overhang ! however they seem quite sturdy on them with a little bit of BluTac fixing them.. ;)

Centre of yhe driver at ear level, is always the best formula for upright floor mounted DC Tannoys. If you have studio Lockwoods that are ceiling mounted then they need to be angled so the driver axis' cross at ear height. The Partingdales are a good match. I know you've said you room is not that big, If you see any Lockwood Academy 2s with Monitor Golds, well worth a listen��

I heard some more modern 10" Prestige speakers (can't remember the exact model) not so long back and thought the upper mids were shouty. I was surprised because I expected them to sound better than the studio monitors - could of been the electronics though...

They are..."shouty" that is. It's the horn resonance and little can be done except to tweak the notch filter in the crossover. I've a few designs which help the issue which work well.

I had Turnberrys and whilst I did like them, the honk in the mid range eventually caused me to give them up in favour of HPDs which were much MUCH better (in the right cabinets) and sacrificed nothing in the way of bass.

Indeed. Vintage HPDs or Monitor Golds (in the right cabinets) eat Turnberrys alive, making them sound rather 'frigid' and uncouth. For me, in terms of the current Prestige range, 'proper' Tannoy DCs start from the Kensingtons upwards :)

The dem was cut short by my wife ( who has no interest in Audio whatsoever) and I haven't been in the Oldham area since, living as I do in Scotland. Will you let us know your preferred speaker if you decide on a preference? Ta!

Matt I think the System 10 is quite rare and I thought trying out the DC sound for not too much money in the 800's was a good introduction to Tannoy's, which is how it has turned out. I would totally agree with the vocals sounding lifelike and I was listening to them late into the night last night at low volume and they still sounded very good

With my smallish room too much deep bass is a no no and I don't want to annoy my lovely neighbours as I believe that very low bass is the sound that carries the most so the lack of very deep bass is not a problem to me... I also have a sub if I want a bit more bass.. I can't comment on the tweeter in my 800's but I can't say I've found it lacking in detail :)

I've never heard any other Tannoy so also can't comment on their sound, but I am so happy with my rather modest 800's :D

Oops I forgot, some years ago I did have a pair of DMT's which are think were the 15's... and to be honest I was not that impressed and they didn't stay for long at all... However if I had them now I might like them as I know my hearing has changed over the years... ;)

Hi Michael ah yes I see they do Audion amps too which I've always considered pretty good. It's a shame you didn't get to have a full listen to the Heresy's. I think they are a superb speaker and one which I doubt I will ever sell.. and I've had dozens of speakers come and go. In fact the Heresys's are the only speaker I have purchased twice... my current pair and a set some years ago which I stupidly sold..!! :doh:

I really don't wan't to swap back to the Klipsch as I am enjoying the Tannoy's so much... I guess character is a tricky one to explain really Shane... I think the 800's sound fantastic but whether that means they have character or not I really couldn't say.. I just love their presentation whether that means character or not. They do sound very good on the end of my Oto... and they are so very easy to listen to with absolutely no listener fatigue... ;)

I know my old ones (system 10) were a larger model but coming from the same family they should have the same "character" - or lack of it.

Trying to read between the lines, the only problem I had in that respect was with rock type music. Stuff like Metallica sounded a bit too polite on my Tannoys and I've since realised every plastic coned speaker I've owned had the same problem. Electric guitars just don't have that bite that you get with paper driver. I've heard people say it's the self damping of the cone that softens the edges and that makes sense to me.

Saying all that, I wouldn't say mine had no character though. I thought they were great fun!

There's no shortage of "bite" with either the System 800 or the System 10 DMT. As Shane implied, they are 'monitors' (in the true sense) and don't impart a huge sonic signature on the music. I am very familiar with the sound of both these models. Any perceived lack of 'wallop' is possibly down to the partnering equipment. I've heard the 10s deliver some pretty impressive big and tight sounds with no sense of strain. Even the smaller 800 is capable of a seriously punchy performance. Specs are I believe 92db sensitivity and up to 180 watt power handling, so high levels are easily achieved.

I can't say my 800's lack bite to be honest... however I don't play Metallica type music, as it's not my bag, but maybe if I did I would find a shortfall ;)

Tannoys are hard to beat. You have a good sized set. wish I had doh.mine are going to be sold alas as I cant tame the bass in my room. Will have to try and design some boxes first.

It's a shame you don't get on with your Tannoy's Grant. I do love mine and they seem perfect for my small'ish room

Indeed i do......:eyebrows: We could do that i have put them back in the main system and they will be their until i fancy trying something different....There are a good DC design and they do go loud as Geoff stated in your tannoy post ;). They are a bit colored a bit but are good at imaging and that to me is all that matters might not be as good as the 800's mine are an 8 inch driver...:thumbsup:

I keep being amazed how much bass the 800's have

Compared to the Heresy's they seem to be deeper and I have not been tempted to use the sub as yet with them which seems incredible considering they only use an 8" driver... ;)

According to Tannoy they are about 10.5 kg each... so fairly heavy but not to bad to transport to Dan's... :)

They measure: (HxWxD) 275 mm x 450 mm x 267 mm

I have them mounted on the long side as that's how they look best to me and it's how the Tannoy emblem is orientated

They are definite keepers Grant, I love them... Geoff was correct about them...

Very nice now that the base is under control. they had great soundstage and presence with plenty activity behind the speakers but b4 the base got overpowering, and with the glass stands there was a resonance that annoyed the hell out of me, but they are well behaved now thanks.

They look very nice Grant... wonder if your 8" is the same ' ish as used in my 800's.. If so I am guessing your 637's may sound similar to my 800's but with more bass of course... ;)

Then I think they must sound superb.... thanks to Geoff I love my 800's.... In my room I am not lacking any bass, in fact they better the Heresy's for bass even though the Heresy has a 12" bass unit...and the Tannoy's are, of course, only 8"... ;)

I used to use a sub with the Heresy's but have not needed to with the Tannoy's... :)

Well I've swapped back to the Klipsch and I cannot decide between those and the Tannoy's

I put the Tannoy's back into the sytem as I THINK I prefer them to the Klipsch, but It's a close run thing and they are quite different sounding..

Now I have a dilemma: do I sell the Klipsch or just store them for a 'rainy day' ?

If I sold them I won't be able to buy another pair this new and in this condition...
