I've a Sony TA-FB940R I've been using for a few days to drive Magneplanar 1.6QR speakers.

It has started fading in level and distorting, both on the R channel.

If I push the source-direct button it comes back to normal, then fades / distorts again after a minute or two.

Suggestions?

Only cost me £100 so not sure if it worth taking to a repair guy - they charge half that just to take it in the door!

Does the amp get warm? Just wondering if heat is influencing the switch contacts. Can't you get inside to short out the switch?

The amp is maybe struggling with them. I think 100watt is the minimum

I own several pairs of maggies and they all love decent power amps with lots of current up em. Just look at the surface area you are trying to move.......

Sounds like an output relay is giving up. I had this on an FA-30ES not so long ago. Repairable but I lost all confidence in the amp.

Umm -- yes, the amp was getting rather warm - especially as I had the vents mostly covered up.

Darn thing was perfectly OK and barely made it to cool driving some Ushers.

Just didn't think about it when changing speakers.

Will let it cool off a bit then see what happens ....

Nope. It's buggered. :(

OK on headphones, though.
