Hi all, from Dublin!

Hi all!
I love music -I've played a few different instruments in my life, played in and written music for rock bands. I have good ears, I think ( terrible eyesight though: ). I've been drawn more and more to quality sound over last few years. Have a gramophone from around 1920, size of a washing machine, because the sound off well-kept 78s is so sweet. Been gathering vinyl second hand for donkey's years as well. And now, finally, I've tried to pull together a hi fi system. THORENS TD160, a SANSUI AU 505 amp, TANNY DORSET speakers... just to get me started... PUt it all together this morning, and I'm not hearing anything: ))). So I reckon I need help. Which is what brings me here!

Welcome Yvonne to AoS. Dont know the amp tbh. does it have an inbuilt phono stage.? what cartridge is in the thorens?

Welcome to AoS I hope you find the answers to your questions.

The 505 does have a phonostage but with vintage equipment there could be so much gone wrong in the chain its going to be hard to figure out what isn't working. Could be cartridge is damaged, cable in the tonearm damaged, phonostage in the amp faulty etc. First step would be to see if the amp and speakers are fine, if you have a CD player connected to the amp does music come out of both speakers ? If so then amp is working.

Are the cables from the turntable connected to the input on the amp marked phono ? If not then that might be the problem solved, if so then try wiggling the cable from the recordplayer and see if music appears briefly, maybe crackling. If not then being honest it needs checked out by a hifi shop. Richer Sounds might help, Cloney Audio could be worth trying.

Hi Yvonne. Welcome to AOS.

I reckon you've come to the right place. We can generally sort most people's Hi-Fi problems out.

I've owned the turntable and amplifier you mention and I'm pretty familiar with the Tannoy Dorsets. That little lot should make a nice system for you, they are all quality items.

Are you familiar with setting up a Hi-Fi?

If you're not getting any sound at all, I'd say the amp is maybe suspect, but best check the source (turntable) over first.

As Grant suggested, start a thread in our Blank Canvas section where everybody can see it and outline your problem. You'll get loads of replies.
