For sale: Ortofon VMS20EC Mk. II cartridge.

Selling on behalf of a friend of mine, an Ortofon VMS20EC Mk. II cartridge. The VMS designs (Variable Magnetic Shunt) by Ortofon have always received good reviews.

The full specification can be found here: http://ortofon.com/hifi/products/historical-products/vms-cartridges-technical-data. But to summarise the salient points:

Frequency range: 20 – 20,000Hz
Channel balance at 1 kHz: 2dB
Separation at 1kHz: 25dB
Dynamic compliance (lateral at 10Hz): 25 cu
Tip mass: 0.5mg
Stylus profile: (nude) elliptical
Vertical tracking force: 0.8 – 1.2g (1.0g recommended)
Cartridge mass: 5g

Output (1kHz at 5cm/s): 5mV.

The cartridge is virtually brand new having had very little use (estimated at 5 – 10 hours maximum). Examination under 30x magnification shows the stylus to be in immaculate condition; clean with absolutely no sign of wear whatsoever, as the following photomicrographs show.

It is recommended that a low effective mass pickup arm be used such as: the SME Series II (improved); the SME III; the Hadcock, or the Mission arm.

Sadly the original packaging is not available, nor is the data sheet and fixings, but alternative secure packaging will be provided.

Asking £50 + £6.45 Royal Mail Special Delivery (Insured next day delivery).

Hi Barry,

I also have an Ortofon VMS20E Mk. II but it hasn't got the letter "C". What does it stand for?

I have no idea King. Since I'm selling this on behalf of a non-member, I thought I would be best to advertise it 'as is'. Typing "Ortofon VMS20EC Mk. II" into Google provides plenty of hits, but they all seem to refer to the usual 20E and not the 20EC.

Barry

VMS 20 MkII series were manufactured with designations VMS 20 E, EX, EC, EOS and EO. All abbreviations are for Elliptical diamond with slightly differences in diamond polishing. The VMS 20S was fitted with a spherical shaped diamond.

Differences between MkI and MkII are really minor and lie mainly in the suspension (different rubber). The rest is related to other parts not directly connected to performance. Tech data for MkI and MKII are identical apart compliance, where the original was slightly more compliant, and VTF-range which is more restricted on the MKII

Hi Grant,

Thanks for your clarification!
I didn't know there were so many different designations of them as I haven't come across any others except the E. I also have a VMS 10E MkII but my VMS 3 MkII and VMS30 MkII don't have any suffix.

Is there no interest in this near-mint, high quality cartridge?
