Really nice pair of QUAD 50D that apparently fail the 'looks' test --- they are not in perfect condition but considering age are good.
They were serviced by AmpLabs in 2013 who have a good reputation I believe and have conventional RCA connections
The 50D are the professional version of the 50E monoblocks as i understand it ( feel free to correct as I don't claim to be a Quad expert )
They sound really very good and I would prefer to swap them for something of similar quality to match my Croft Pre, including another Quad power that is a bit more of a conventional looking 'box'
My only note would be that with the Croft there was a little bit of noise through the speakers but I am as certain as I can be that is because of the Croft having a relatively high gain --- when pre isnot on there is no noise.
I've had a 405/2 before and I personally prefer the sound of these monoblocks but it is an entirely personal view.
I welcome any advice and suggestions.
There is a pair of 50E for sale from a well respected dealer for £500 --- I'm not expecting that for mine although I think mine are in better shape but it gives a base to work from --- prefer swap as I need an amp but happy ofcourse to sell outright and buy seperately.

I see there is a pair of 50E for sale for £350 on an auction site so maybe a better guide to value but again they look a bit rougher to me (!)

How I wish I could justify these (apparently the house comes first). They are the only amps that I would happily swap for my Stereo 20. I regret selling mine to this day, all for the sake of some money:doh:

I agree that they are better the the 405. I had both at the same time and the 405 went first.

What can I swap??? Wife? Car? Cats?

Good luck with it but I reckon you should keep them and sell the Croft:).

Ha ha thanks --- I hope I dont regret it too ---- I really love the Croft, again its contentious but I really think it is potentially the pick of the pre's even though its the cheapest just for my ears anyway ---- tks for bump though ---- you've got me worried about changing but it just makes my life easier ha ha
cheers

I assume the speaker connections have been wired to the 8 Ohm taps on the output transformer.

I have a pair of 50Es (also ex BBC) which have been used successfully with both Quad 57s and B&W DM2As. The Quad 50D are identical save for fewer speaker impedance options. They sound different to both the 303 and the 405. Which is better is a matter of opinion, but certainly the 50Ds and 50Es are a very good and reliable set of monoblocks.

Good luck with the sale.

I never regretted selling mine.. btw mine had Red unit number plates fixed under the heatsink, they seem to have the unit number stamped in the Alloy sink!

I've had one very nice offer I think I will pursue my only concern being that it's a bit of a beast and might overwhelm my speakers a tad but it should ensure control .... but if you are umming and ahhing then please get in touch asap -- tks
