I thought this was a wind up at first but it appears to be a real thing, claims its fully analog....

Let the argument begin

Think they were out in the late 90s or early 2000s.. You're behind the times!

And there's one on ebay for £3300 secondhand : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELP-LT-1LRC-laser-turntable-little-used-/151653884893 purchased by the seller to digitise his vinyl.

Seem to remember reading that one problem with them is that they "read" the dust instead of a stylus pushing it aside, so you have to practically use it under lab conditions for best results (which I guess is ok if you're doing one-time digitising of your vinyl).

Don't see why that isn't to be expected... the laser reading a CD is analogue too! What is digital about CD is the translation/catagorising the analogue position into either a 1 or a 0, like deciding on whether each shade of grey should be considered nearer white or black.

In this record player, the laser will be tracking a continually and nearly infinately variable surface and the receiver will be generating a continuously and nearly infinately variable signal in response - i.e. analogue.

I am indeed behind the times.... I wasn't thinking of getting on though btw:lol:

One of the great hifi stories of yore. It was first announced in the mid 70's, but didn't appear in production until the mid 90's (having bankrupted several people along the way) by which time vinyl had gone away. Originally called Finial, IIRC.
