I thought I would do a mock up to see what it looked like:

I'm really pleased with how it looks, just got to get the insides made :eyebrows:

Change that font man!! :)

No :ner:

What's wrong with it?

Nothing Alan, does the job. Unit looks great.

Bit of a font nazi and just personal preference I guess. :)
To my eye some designs cry out for particular fonts, depending on the "vibe" of the kit.
Those knobs and the black brushed aluminium faceplate look (to me) very high end.

The Firebottle and Kin font looks a bit utilitarian to my fussy eyes, should be something classier to sell the vibe imho.

Of course, that's just me being pedantic and sticking my nose in!

I think you are leaving yourself open to '...KINell' jokes here or was that why you chose the name?

Yes the font is wrong, as is the font colour...its GOLD on black :eyebrows:, with coachlines in ...GOLD ;)

Well it could be KINell it sounds good, or 'KIN amazing. Take your pick ;)

That is totally h:lol:rrible. Never ever use script capitals - looks disgusting - just like that.

Comic Sans for the win.

Why is everybody so cruel to a fun, harmless typeface? I'm starting the RSPCCS and we need to stand firm against the font nazis.

On the facia aspect I always think less is lot more classy.. e.g. don't need to show which way the volume goes, explain how a power button works nor even label the selector knob (the positions will give the game away). They would only be helpful for anyone who's never ever seen hifi before (I guess not your customers) and then hopefully they'd learn within 2 seconds?

With the branding, I think logos are better and you could even leave the model name to the back although most don't. Here's a start at a logo for you: http://cliparts101.com/files/636/055E4D12BAA3F04218FDEF6407DF360A/molotov_cocktail.png :D

Some development for the inners to the Firebottle KIN. The power supply and line section:

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt97/Paramotorpilot/P1040819.jpg?1431197340871&1431197344653

Tomorrow I may even get them wired together and tested ;)

Firebottle

Now wired up and tested. Started with an 'orrible hum, but earthing one of the secondaries cured that.

Looks like a lot in the box for just a single stage preamp, but to do it properly does require a 'bit on the side'.

http://i601.photobucket.com/albums/tt97/Paramotorpilot/P1040820.jpg

Note the oversize power supply gubbings on the left, I though I would give myself a bit of headroom for possible experiments with alternative valves.
Plus it includes remote volume and mute control.

Well the performance is so transparent I should have called it the Firebottle Glass. I don't have the correct test equipment with me to characterise the output impedance but I though I would give it a whirl driving some 50 ohm headphones directly from the output.

Gobsmacking  A little light on the bass but that's to be expected with the size of output coupling capacitor.

Well impressed with the new 'super linear circuit' for the triode stage, watch this space for an improved phono section based on the same.

Superb Alan, your stuff is going from strength to strength.

I'm firing up Illustrator and taking a look at your logo, just for fun. :)

Why a wine bottle...thinking of a different type as valves play such a big part in your designs?

Summit rough n ready to give the idea.
Easy enough to "logo-fy" it. :)

Anything which makes one think of equipment bursting into flames should be avoided I'd say....

That's better Gaz, I wasn't keen on the wine bottle type.

Not sure about the 4 pin base but appreciate having a valve with a base gives room for the text

Gaz, a bit of thread drift but did Ali take a look at your Densen and figure if it had gain or not?

Yep, think your right on that one Alan, lose the valve pins.
Can logo-fy it as white outlines to allow easy screen printing...white on black metal background...blue on silver, etc.
Just thinking out loud...

Contacted Densen and asked...
The Tech I spoke to said the amp was that old he didn't know!
There IS some SMT circuitry on the underside of the board, and he reckoned this signified that there was gubbins there giving gain built into the circuit, x2 he reckoned.

Welcome to take a look-see Ali next chance we get.

Had the pleasure of Alan round last night for a couple of hours with the KIN pre amp, I must admit he has done an excellent job with this pre amp, the workmanship is excellent and sounds pretty dam good as well. Initially we played some tunes with my LDR passive pre hooked upto my AN mono blocks and all was sounding very good, plumbed in the KIN and after the pre warmed up it really did start to shine, very well balanced and a nice smooth presentation.

By the end of the night I was preffering the KIN to my LDR which left a bit of food for thought on my behalf and system

Overall a big thumbs upto Alan and his new project

Had another session last night with Alans new pre amp, this time round a friends house who was using the Ming Da £35k mono blocks with the latest Lampizator Golden Gate Dac into Horns speakers. Normally for pre amp duties a Townsend Passive Pre is used which has always sounded very good indeed.

In went the KIN and bloody hell it sounded superb, the detail retrieval was at another level along with a very smooth non fatiguing presentation, a similar situation that I had round at my house.

All in all a very enjoyable evening and again an excellent job that Alan has done with this pre amp.
