There are time when I wonder why I bother to do a good deed. Someone I know gave the a sob story (true as it happens) about her friend who was going to have his 75th birthday party on the 17th of May but died a few weeks ago. She is still going to have the party but make it into a memorial do.

He left her a huge collection of LPs but nothing to play them on. So I said I'd put together a system for her.

Nice Teac amp, Pioneer PL112D/Rega Elan and some Wharfdale Diamond 7 Pro speakers. Nothing spectacular but it all gelled really well and sounded very good. Certainly much nicer than the all in one JVC stack they had which had destroyed its speakers.

I set it all up at their place this morning and came home for lunch. Got an email to say that it wasn't working on one channel. Well it was when I left it.

Got there and guess what!! Volume control almost on max and the bass control completely on max. The Teac is 90watts per channel RMS into 8 ohms. God knows what it pumped through with the bass on max and with what distortion.

After giving hubby a lecture on the difference between hi-fi and disco equipment and orders to only use it with the tone defeat button glowing green, I sold them a crap pair of Panasonic speakers so they at least have music for their party. I doubt his wife will let him touch it again. If they put all the power through the Panasonics - 4ohms, France could have a new satellite in orbit.

I am really pissed off in spite of the fact they paid me for the system. Its such a waste of a good little pair of speakers that sounded very good if not brilliant. Hi-fi really is wasted on some people:(

Yup, one little 5" bass unit has left this mortal coil.

I feel your pain Gordon, but have learned over the years that you have to ask all sorts of questions that you wouldn't normally consider when dealing with, for want of a better expression, 'hi-fi muggles"!

As I mainly find myself supplying turntables to people, the first three questions I now ask are "what colour do you want?", "Is it important that the arm lifts on/off the record on its own?" and "What are you plugging it into?" after one of the first ever purchases I made for someone was rejected because it was manual, wouldn't work into an A/V receiver that turned out to have no phono stage and was "too big and too brown"! :doh:

I have also learned the hard way, like you, that asking how loud people wish to listen is a wise move, In my case it was a Yamaha receiver and the casualties were a pair of Mordaunt Short MS25s. I replaced them with a pair of big Realistic things with horn tweeters and the whole setup is still going strong about 4 years on!

I should have known as the very first thing he asked me was "where are the tone controls". I pointed out the defeat switch at the time but it didn't register with either of us obviously.

I can picture a lot of speakers giving up and dying when having Neil Diamond poured through them. :D
