From what I understand, it's in a sealed environment.

Good news. I did notice.
I did a bit of research on the net, and the answer I found is how you fixed it. I just ran out of time to post a link, so it's good to see you have fixed it.

Modern synthetic oil, and the bearing is not exactly living a hard life at 33.3 or 45rpm is it? Modern car engines have very long oil change intervals, (i.e. every 30,000km) and they turn at a few thousand more RPM...

When I bought mine, David at MCRU sent me a small bottle of clear oil and told me to fill the well at the top (where centre spindle meets the main body) every 6 months or so.
When I checked after 6 months the well was dry, so I just topped it up again. I don't think the oil was used up but probably just evaporated.

Thats intersting as the oil supplied is not clear at all! It's a dark colour like strong tea without milk.

I hope DC gave you the right oil, mine came direct from Mike. I would check.

I think I heard that somebody on here uses Johnsons Baby Oil!

I have just oiled my VPI bearing with some Origin live oil - very good stuff indeed.

A review of bearing oils was done and this one came out top - spin test (amount of revolutions after spinning up and leaving to stop):rolleyes:

+1 for the Origin Live oil - I use it in my Systemdek, and it is excellent.

Hi Andrew,
I have just picked up this thread (Sunday Afternoon) and I believe I have answered your question on the "Mike New Bearing" Thread or else where.
The general answer is that the bottom vertical support bearing-well is sealed.
The lateral support bearing is a honed and oil impregnated syntered hard Phos-Bronze insert. And as such does not really need any oiling.
I supply a small syringe of oil to seal the top of the bearing from dust more than for lubrication.

if it's an original Systemdek with the spiral cut into the spindle, the design used EP80 or even EP90 in the earliest ones, doe to viscosity and thickness.

My one is a later model with the plain spindle, resting on a ball bearing. The Origin Live oil is just fine. But I do have plenty of EP80/90 in the garage should I ever need it. More likely to use it in axles and steering boxes though!
