Conspicuous consumerism, in the midst of an economic turn down greater than the world has known for 80 odd years, in world in which a third of all children go to sleep hungry every night, smacks of more than mere vulgarity it is avarice bordering on the edge of immorality, not to mention pornographic corruption.

I would build my own
It would use the VPI supper platter with bearing £1000 with the Verus drive £1500 a slate plinth £250 with the Terminator arm £550 and Decca london Cartridge £1000 it would look a bit like this apart from the platter

If I could source a different platter and bearing then the cost might come down
Its a simple design and could do in stages perhaps get a motor first then when funds can afford go for the Verus

None of these are truly high end turntables, here is one that is click here (http://www.stereophile.com/turntables/106con/) to see it.

And here is another one click here (http://www.clearaudio.de/eng/lw_statement.html) to see it?

All these are around 100K depending on options, and finally here is a third one, click here (http://blog.stereophile.com/ces2008/011008trans/)to be amazed?

Now where are those 200K turntables, we know they are out there?

Dave,

Presuming a lottery win, the only one I'd entertain there is the Continuum. It's the only T/T amongst that selection I feel is genuninely innovative in terms of engineering and technology :)

I bet it'd sound the best, too - and the others look positively hideous!

Marco.

This deck came straight from a radio station but is in surprisingly good condition. It has a fairly prosaic Shure MM fitted which appears to be wired through to an onboard phono stage. I'll get used to it using that initially and then (if need be) try a more ambitious MM. After that I'll need to see whether there's some way of getting access to the output of the arm and attaching my own transformer & phono stage which might give me a better idea of what the deck & arm can do.

I did borrow a TSD-15 for a couple of months a few years ago but didn't really get on with it. Certainly powerful sounding but not so nice to listen to even after a deal of experimentation with loading. I'd like to try my Io and transformer with this if I can find a way to connect them. As the deck is borrowed, I can't really do anything too major to it.

It certainly is a beautifully made thing even if the thin disc 'platter' and thick heavy mat take some getting used to. I wasn't quite prepared for how large it would be either. My slate plinthed SP10 is enormous & this is almost the same size.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i318/murrayjohnson/P1010066.jpg

I suspect the motor units will have a similar (ie not much at all) sound. I suppose the SMEV on my other SP10 may be different in presentation to the 929 though.

Hi Guy,

Where have you been? Apart from your contributions above I haven't seen you posting for ages. I hope business is good. Will you be at the forthcoming show? :)

This deck came straight from a radio station but is in surprisingly good condition. It has a fairly prosaic Shure MM fitted which appears to be wired through to an onboard phono stage.

It looks pretty good to me. Which radio station does it belong to?

Yes I can see now, it's a Shure SC35C - I've got one myself. It's a nice little cartridge, actually, with a very solid 'meaty' sound, albeit it lacks 'sparkle' and top-end extension. It'll certainly sound rather shut-in and compressed compared to your Io, but good enough for the job in hand. Incidentally, ignore the ridiculous recommended VTF of 4-5g (!) - I use mine quite happily at 2.5g in the Jelco. This opens things up quite considerably.

I'll get used to it using that initially and then (if need be) try a more ambitious MM. After that I'll need to see whether there's some way of getting access to the output of the arm and attaching my own transformer & phono stage which might give me a better idea of what the deck & arm can do.

I think the deck and arm are of very good quality, the deck exceptionally so. The arm is quite high-mass and will ideally suit low-compliance MC cartridges. A Denon DL-103 is absolutely tailor-made for the job, providing that you can fit it into the EMT's headshell. However it should be possible, as I've seen it done before. It might be fun to see how the 103 performs in its natural 'habitat' on a broadcast turntable...

I have a spare stock 103 that I'm not using at the moment, which I could send to try if you wish. It would be a good opportunity to analyse what a 'vanilla' 103 is capable of (as you've expressed an interest in doing this before), and you can play around with some of your transformers to see what matches it best. Just PM me if you're interested :)

I did borrow a TSD-15 for a couple of months a few years ago but didn't really get on with it. Certainly powerful sounding but not so nice to listen to even after a deal of experimentation with loading.

That's interesting, as I've also heard a TSD-15 and loved it, but that was with its matching transformer. There are so many variables with these things, but it's still on my cartridge wanted list, along with an SPU. These will duly be obtained in due course when I buy one of Dave C's refurbished SP10s.

I suspect the motor units will have a similar (ie not much at all) sound. I suppose the SMEV on my other SP10 may be different in presentation to the 929 though.

I'd certainly be very interested in your thoughts, so keep us posted, and with pictures

I've just got it on loan for a month or so. I think it came from someone up in Bristol.

Under the platter. the 3 brass coloured plates with red topped bolts through them can be moved in to lock the motor for transit. The 3 red slot headed screws release the suspension system. It is all very nicely engineered.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i318/murrayjohnson/P1010072.jpg

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i318/murrayjohnson/P1010073.jpg

The platter is this strange thin disc which has a thick rubber mat placed on top.

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i318/murrayjohnson/P1010074.jpg

and playing

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i318/murrayjohnson/P1010077.jpg

So far not so good. Unsurprisingly the Shure cartridge is, well a Shure cartridge. Sleepy, undynamic & subjectively band limited. Probably ideal for radio station use. Its set to track quite heavily (3g) but there's little surface noise or treble extension so it sounds a bit like am radio.

I suspect that the onboard phono stage is a bit of a dead sounding thing too.

I need to get this cartridge off & fit something more modern & more lively. then I'll know whether the phono stage has any merit. A loan 103 would definitely be interesting but I'll have to figure out how to switch the onboard stage to MC or bypass it altogether.

All that said, you can tell the motor unit is good although the rubber mat has an effect like the rubber mat does on the SP10 only more so!

It may be that the deck & arm are actually pretty decent. Let's see.

Marco
11-09-2009, 09:21
Nice pics - very informative :)

It will definitely require a better cartridge and phono stage to hear what the EMT can do, certainly if you can get your Io 'on the job', as it were with its transformer, then things will undoubtedly change quite dramatically. Are you planning on trying to fit the SME V or Alphason?

I suspect that with the right phono stage in place, a 103 should positively sing on the EMT. I've also got a Denon HA-500 MC head amp you could borrow along with the 103, should you not have a transformer that ideally matches it. Anyway, let me know if you fancy it.

Are you going to the Chesterfield show at the end of the month?

Marco.

11-09-2009, 09:37
Yes, I'll have equipment in a couple of rooms there. Aspara will be using some as may Coherent Systems although Tony usually plays a variety of interesting set-ups during the course of a show.

If I can get it to sound the way I want it to, I do have permission to take the EMT along (for a change!) but its some way from being there yet.

The arm is currently connected directly to the phono stage. There are no arm leads in the conventional sense. I need to see whether I can get at what comes out of the base of the arm before it is routed to the electronics.

Marco
11-09-2009, 09:42
Well if I can help and you'd like to borrow the 103 & head amp, just ask. You can probably tell that I'm rather keen myself to hear what the results would be! :)

Certainly keep us updated of events with your project. Look forward to seeing you at the show, hopefully if I can get away.

About the Transrotor: "Its power supply uses something called "Konstant M3," which I gather is pretty special, but my limited German and the Transrotor rep's far less limited English prevented me from determining in what way."

Funny how a massive pricetag can lead people to believe that everything on it MUST be very special indeed.

About the Continuum: "In the 1980s, as a hobby, Doehmann began building for himself and his friends one-off turntables—all of which are still in use today. Through his love of music and audio—especially analog sound—he made the acquaintance of David Payes, another audiophile and analog fanatic, who had made his fortune in the digital domain, with computers. A few years ago, Payes asked Doehmann what he would do, if cost were not an issue, to improve his already high-performance custom turntable. Doehmann suggested replacing the acrylic platter with one that would provide a more silent, inert foundation."

Either that new platter cost loads or he was so generous that he spent £50,000 on each turntable he gave to his friends!

For either £50,000 or £100,000 I could rent a space, hire/buy equipment and dedicate a whole year to designing and making a turntable whilst still paying myself a good year's salary on top! And then come away with both a great turntable, a whole brainful of new knowledge and loads of new skills to boot. I could probably even get some of the work done for me and just put my feet up.

Anyone want to sponsor me with money upfront? You will get to keep the turntable too.

Hello Beechwoods,

Thanks for the welcome to the A.O.S., terrific forum.

The turntable gallery at www.tapeheads.net has over 300 decks which I augment with new images of classics and new tables - never been a better time to own a deck.
There is also a tonearm and cartridge gallery there too.

My interest is purely analogue: vinyl and cassette period, I'll chime in soon with system details and commentary.
