A new arrival at Firebottle towers, an almost finished RCM :D

Just needs the electrical side of things fitting and it's good to go. Got it from a friend of a fellow AoS member as an unfinished project, he does have another RCM anyway.

Managed to get the right sized fittings from B&Q to connect the vacuum cleaner easily as well.

Personally i would have fitted an acrylic sheet over the whole of the top..

Can we have a list of parts than pretty please..

Why is the switched spur fitted on the top plate? Or is that bit not finished?

It is just sitting on top with a fuse.

Ha, yes I see. Should have looked closer!

Good job Alan!

Glad you cleared that up Grant, as like Tom I had some concerns re the power switch being located too close to any potential spillage.

If you ever decide to take this any further re experimenting I feel that suction from the under side 'a la Moth' has some advantages for better workflow, particularly when working through large batches. Also the wand supports the LPs underside preventing any flexing if you use a side to side scrubbing action over the wand. I've modded my Moth pro Mk.2 with a compliant gasket that promotes better contact to the LPs underside & this has improved the suction cycle performance.

Really good work, though!! I really quite like the look & the case looks nice & compact & good 'n sturdy.

A different project this time.

I acquired a small hand held mains powered vacuum cleaner, so I am going to fit it inside my existing RCM.

RCM as purchased in an unfinished state:

RCM in working condition but requiring an external vacuum cleaner:

Small hand held vac bought from the local charity shop for €8. Its rated at 650W so perfect for the application:

I have dispensed with the dust bag and front 'nozzle' section and made a short adapter piece to connect to the short hose:

Now the vacuum section is inside the RCM box I have had to fit an exit vent for the air.
Looking around the workshop I spied a small speaker so I have filtched the front 'baffle' with a cloth front, so this is now the cover for the air exit vent:

Just got to fit an extra switch on the top panel to control the vacuum and it's all done.

Seems like an awful lot of grief when you can buy a new, purpose built one, for £350.

That's a lot of money to me, this has cost me a tenth of that :)

Well you can but there's no fun in that

not £350 but £299 :P
I have started to build my own RCM based on Loricraft design but when VC-S came out at that price tag I have ordered it straight and sold all parts I bought for my build :)
I have lost interest because it was not worth it anymore...

If you can make it work it will certainly be worth it Alan.

As you no doubt buy a lot of used vinyl it makes such a difference once it's cleaned. I could not be without one for sure.

Now finished, RCM with built in vacuum.

No more lugging the vacuum cleaner out of the cupboard :)

Nice job Alan. Have to say years ago i was intent on building one saying this cannot be very hard to to.... I thought about it and started pricing things etc and then bit the bullet and bought a moth... Decided it would likely take me several goes to get right and end up costing a fortune .
So, to have got it right first time deserves much praise

Looks the biz Alan, let us know how effective it is?

Maybe another Firebottle line? :)

It's as good as any of the vacuum RCMs I reckon. I am just using up some fluid I was given with the unfinished unit then I shall be getting some of 'The right one' from Paul.

Can't do it as another FB line as I've never seen another of the small hand held vac :(
I'll stick to electronics.

As you know I have a VPI and although it's good it's quite basic.

Did you use some felt on the vacuum suck up tube?

Firebottle
29-03-2016, 10:47
There is some thin felt on the 'extraction' tube yes.

Look on the bright side, if it's not any good as a record cleaner, it'll give a damn good colonic!!

Alan can you pop a record on and photograph it so I can see how it looks in operation as it were?

Nice job Alan

Alan is correct in saying it's as good as any commercial machine, I too have this design and so does Phil (ocean obsession) and for what these cost, probably less than £30 they are an absolute bargain, I've cleaned quite a few hundred records on the machine and cleaned quite a few for friends including Alan before he built his and they do an excellent job
