Revox A77 Reel To Reel Advice

Hi Guys

Well their was a surprise waiting in a outside my front door this morning in the way of the Revox Reel to Reel. A neighbor is moving and he found this in the loft its actually very clean. The question is what to do before powering it up to test head clean , Check fuses , General clean up the jobs a good un. Any advice guys would be appreciated PS whats the name of the power cable i should be using :scratch:

I would change the Rifa caps before anything else, they will be dried out and likely to pop (horrid smell and lots of black smoke)

I'd turn it on and see if it works first.

Dan, if it's not been used for some time, ie years, if you don't have a variac, plug it in switch it on then off immediately, give it a couple of minutes and if all is OK repeat with a couple of seconds between on and off. Continue to repeat, while halving the time between switch on cycles and doubling the time it's switched on. This can help by preventing a big stress/shock to the system. Get some neat isopropanol and clean the heads, capstan and guides. Use 50% iso to distilled and clean the pinch roller (after the initial clean, you can use this mix for everything). Lace up a tape and try it out, enjoy :cool:

No thats just an X2 mains filter, I think he means the RIFA grey cans that are part of the motor control circuit's, e.g. C151 for the capstan motor

think if memory serves, they were metalised paper. made a godaweful mess when they exploded.

The other problem with all Revox decks is the Frako electrolytic caps they dry out over the years and some fail short taking out other components with them
Most of the Tantalum caps I measured in my A77 had very high ESR, so changed them all
