View Full Version : What colour should I paint my Tecchy??

You can see below how my Tecchy currently looks. It was constructed from MDF boards bolted to the sides of the original upper plinth, smoothed over with filler then veneered and finished with Danish oil.

It doesn't look too bad in the image but in real life, it's not so great. There are bad joins and the finish is uneven.

Ideally, I'd like the sort of look created by Inspire, reverting to an original upper plinth (I actually have a spare) and dropping it into a wood surround, but the ones available on the market are too expensive and I don't have the skills to create one myself.

So, I thought I would just paint over the veneer. Anyone got any suggestions? A gloss white might look cool (like my MA speakers), but I'm thinking of doing this myself and if it's not perfect, it might look crappy. I thought therefore maybe using a Plasti-kote or Hammerite spray, both of which seem to be easy to use. Maybe a sort of off-white/antique white silk or matt finish? Or some sort of speckled look? Or hammered gun-metal?

Any suggestions as to finish and how I might successfully apply it (do I need to strip the oil?) would be greatly appreciated!

if you can strip it down then take it to a car body shop. theyll spray and bake it. not too expensive and a nice job. saw a white one on the bay and it looked good. price was silly so might be a bonus come selling time

Any idea how much I'd have to pay to get it done at a car body shop?

Looks like the one from NEBO 4.

I'd go with white or gloss black, personally.

I'm thinking white would be a safe choice. Black is a nightmare for dust.

Actually, the effect I really wanted is akin to the speaker in your avatar! An off-white upper panel with wooden surrounds.

Will depend on the shop I'd guess Keiron. Gary(gazjam) has taken stuff to his local one, like lids of amps etc and said it was reasonable and done right.

Doing up a couple (now 3) of my Bro's 1210's.
Getting them primed, resprayed and baked at local carpaint guy.

He's quoted £45 for each deck.

You should get a strong colour that will look good behind and next to the tone arm and mounting board (and whatever rack it is on). I like the Ferrari Red suggestion.

My daughter is presently honing her artistic/painting skills on anything/everything she can get her hands on.
As her manager, I'm sure we can fit you in soon, for exactly the finish that you need.
She calls it her emulsion/oil phase. Sure to appreciate in value.

It will be a work of art. No one else will have anything like it. It will be the envy of every other AofS member who ever sees it. Ever

Pm for costs, but it wont be cheap.

Sorry, cant do this coming weekend as she has a Brownie camp.

Money as always is no object and I'm sure she'll get lots of commissions from this forum.

I would really like mine in pink crayon finish with various Disney princess motifs around it. Would that be possible?

Richard, I mentioned your wishes to "the artist" and was met with a flurry of bad language. Mainly along the lines of "Disney....Im too old now for that crap".

However, I also mentioned that you were loaded and she has kindly agreed to a very expensive one-off paint job on your turntable. You are a very lucky man.

I should perhaps let you know that the last similar project that she undertook via the AofS was not received well by the guy putting up the not inconsiderable amount of money.
The words "more like stickmen, drawn by a child " were used and sadly these words were not very well received by "the artist". I found out later that "artists" often have tantrums.

It was at that point that she entered her "splodge" period, and the stickmen were very quickly
(about 5 seconds, if I remember ) obliterated....forever. Purple and pink were the main colours used in the tantrum, I think. It was all a bit of a blur, with paint everywhere.

I would anticipate something in between stickmen and chaos for you, and hope that this meets with your approval.
